Question for Contact Lense Wearers

Question for Contact Lense Wearers

I went to get my eyes examined yesterday and the DR. said I have a 1/2 a millimeter blood vessel growing towards my cornea. I was freaking out! I called my aunt in Texas who is an optician and she said it's not a big deal, it just means that my eyes aren't getting enough oxygen, I am 'abusing' my contacts by wearing them too often and not changing them enough so the protein build up cuts off the oxygen supply. I usually change them on the first of every month, she said to do it every two weeks now. FSIL had this too and just got the lasic surgery so she doesn't have to deal with it anymore. My aunt told me to just get the surgery, but I'm so scared!! Now I have to wear my glasses more--NOO!! I HATE wearing glasses. anyone else have this happen to them?

sorry didn't mean to scare you! that doesn't mean you have what i have though!! the dr said i was young for it and it might have to do with my thyroid medicine, which i don't really believe, but next time you go to the eye DR--ask! It also depends what type of lenses you wear, ya know

I change my every 2 weeks!! my girfriend got an infection in her eye for wearing her contacts for too long...a pair would last her 2 months.

you should definatly change your disposible contacts according to the doctor...dont go any longer that supposed to.

I hope you feel better!!

I didn't have that happen but when I went to get my contact for the first time my doctor suggested to get daily disposable ones to avoid things like that. They are a little more expensive but I love them

I wear my contacts until I can't wear them any more, literally until I HAVE to change them.

WOW, that is scary ... I have to look into this more ... thanks for the 'heads up'

I'm glad I could help! a lot of people wear them much longer than they should! Don't worry, it doesn't effect your vision or anything!

Re: Question for Contact Lense Wearers

I can really relate. A few years back I had a scratched cornea. It was due to not having the disposable contacts. The doctor I was using at the time wasnt for disposable (i dont go to him anymore). Anyway, I had to wear my glasses for two weeks. They also said I shouldnt wear contact for long periods of time. I have the two week ones where I throw them out every two weeks. They do have daily ones that are supposed to be better if you have had problems. I am so scared of that surgery too! The thing with the surgery though is you dont have this problem anymore of your eyes not breathing enough from the contacts. Hope your feeling better.

You're right Cindy---thanks everyone for the info! glad to hear i am not the only one with contact woes!! Those daily wears are great, but i asked the DR yesterday and they are like $600-$800 a year! ahhhhh i guess it depends on what kind you get.

Sonia - What a great idea to put a reminder on the computer. I have it on my AOL calendar now. Sometimes I would forget which week I am supposed to change them.

Do you take out your contacts every night or do you wear the extended wear contacts where you keep them in?

Re: Question for Contact Lense Wearers

Have you tried the ones you take out each night - I go to a contact lens specialist (dr who only works with contacts) I have used her since I started wearing contacts 15 years ago. I have one scratched cornea the first year I started wearing contacts - since then I have never had a problem again. I basically REFUSE to wear my glasses - I don't feel I see as well.

I wear my contacts from around the time I wake up each day until I am ready for bed.

I do have friends who have the disposables but many have gone back to the my kind because they have all had one problem or another.

Re: Question for Contact Lense Wearers

I wear Gas Permible. They allow 80% of Oxygen to get in. Paid the extra for the Boston version that allowed the most oxygen. Never have a problem. I have been trying to be good lately and remove them for a 'rest' once a month but I'm lazy.

Normally though, I NEVER remove them .. EVER. I go YEARS and YEARS without replacement or removing. I take them out once in a while to just rinse them off but that's about it. I sleep in them and everything.

It's the whole reason I love them. THey are much smaller than soft contacts and have a true substance to them but are flexible.

I see my eye doctor only when my eyes hurt or once every three years. I've never had them say a word about my contacts even though I ALWAYS admit to them that I don't clean them, don't use the protein remove and I do rinse them in water (even tho they prefer I use my own spit over water). Been wearing contacts for 11 years now.

I replace my contacts once very 3 years just because my conscience tells me I should, otherwise.. nada.

ETA: I may go get glasses this year but I HATE them.. you lose your periphial (sp) vision. Everything to my sides comes blurry and I only see what's dead ahead.. I
HATE that!!!!!

MY FH wears dailys and we get them from 1800 contacts, I think its about $300 a year!

Luckily mine are covered by insurance!

Re: Question for Contact Lense Wearers

that's awesome to have them covered by insurance. i wear frequency 55 which the DR said is good. i thought you were only supossed to replace them once a month, now i am hearing every 2 weeks the most!

That is amazing that you take them out every three years--they don't get dried up!? I NEVER sleep with mine in, unless it is for a short nap or something, I just have them in from morning till night. I, too hate my glasses all perphiral (sp?) is lost. I definetely can't drive in glasses, that's for sure!!
