I want to buy a special gift for a friend who is recently engaged.
She is Jewish, though not VERY religeous, she does observe holidays and attend temple.
I want to get something wedding related, but useful. Any suggestions?!?!?!
Thanks!!
I want to buy a gift, not just get a gift certificate.

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
If you want to get her something *for* the wedding ceremony, you could get her a Kiddush Cup for wine (not the one you break, although you could buy her the breaking glass as well).

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
I think the best gift would be the book 'The New Jewish Wedding' by Anita Diamant.
You could get her a mezuzah if she is moving to a new home with her FI.
You could also get her sedar plate, since she probably doesn't have one.
However, I would ask her is there is some thing see wants -- there are many different styles available for all Judica items and she might have a preference.

I have bought mezzuzzot for friends. I have also bought menorahs for chanukah. You can always have more than one of those.

Something I love and what my sister and I said we would buy for eachother as a wedding gift (and I kept my promise to her 3 years ago when she got married). There are mezzuzah's where you can put the shards of broken glass from the ceremony into. I think it's a very nice and sentimental keepsake from the wedding.

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
Thank you all for the ideas!
I like FallBride05's suggestion of the mezzuzah's where you can put the shards of broken glass from the ceremony, however, they are already living together (this is a 2nd marriage for both, and they have 5 kids between them) so I do not know if this is something they already have!
Is it okay for me to get them the breaking glass, or something to but the glass in (aside from a mezzuzah)?
Pardon me if I sound ignorant, I grew up with 2 Jewish friends, 1 of which converted to Catholic before she was married!
Thanks -Jill

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
Check out this website. It's called Shardz
They have alot of different ideas/gifts regarding the breaking glass.
ETA: They are on the expensive side this website, but this is to give you ideas. If you did a search on google or yahoo, you could probably find a better deal somewhere else.

You don't sound ignorant at all.
Mezuzzot are actually supposed to be on every doorpost in the home. So however many rooms they have, they can display a mezuzzah. Even though I've got one for our Front Door, I want to put our broken glass in a Mezuzzah for our bedroom.
That said, buying Judaica can be a very personal thing for people. My mom wanted to buy us a Kiddush cup and I shopped for months! You know how there are posts on here where 'So and So bought me this unity candle set and it's UGLY!' happens? Well, it happens here too.
It would be okay for you to get the glass if you knew what color she'd like (the glasses are about $25 each), but the thing to put the glass in part can be tricky. A lot of the time you're really just buying them a certificate to order the item (which can cost between $150-$300) once the wedding is over and the glass is broken.
My favorite 'Jewish' present from my wedding was a beautiful picture frame that said 'Ani L'Dodi V'Dodi Li' (I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine) from Jax430.

Is there a local store where I can buy items?

THANK YOU!! I know these items can be very personal (like a unity candle). I saw a lovely frame at Fortunoffs that said 'I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine' with jewels on it. However I have been looking elsewhere for one like it and can't find it!!!

Look at her registry too. I know some of the first things we put on were the seder and challah plates, challah knife, candlesicks and mezuzah!

I wanted to do this....but she has not registered yet. Have not even set a date! They were only engaged about 1 month ago.

I would ask her what she wants- Judaica comes in all kinds of ways and everyone has their own tastes.
If you have your heart set on getting her a Seder plate (for example) ask her to pick out one she likes.
http://www.judaica.com/ this company has lots of nice things. i've ordered from them many times. you can also request a catalogue to show your friend.

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
As someone who isn't very religious, but observes the holidays, I think the seder plate is a really nice idea, espeically since your friend has kids and will presumably have seders with them. A menorah is also a nice idea. Do you know if your friend has a kiddush cup? My temple gave me a kiddush cup on my bat mitzvah which I used on my wedding day. If your friend doesn't have one, that would be a great gift because she could use it on her wedding day.

Re: Question for Jewish Brides
I registered for a challah plate, candle sticks and a knife for Shabbos. They were all Lenox pieces. FH's grandmother bought them for us. I think shes hopeful.
