Question for Nurses (kinda stupid)

Question for Nurses (kinda stupid)

Ok....
My FH shows me this morning this big cut/scratch near his neck... And im like omg what happened...
So turns out he had a sharp pencil behind his ear (he's a carpenter) and when he turned really quickly, with all his force and strength, the pencil went into his skin... (i dont know if you can imagine this) im probably not explaining it well but my question is.... can something happen to him (like an infection or something) from the lead of the pencil?

(i know stupid) but im just so paranoid & im always looking out and making sure everything is ok.

TIA

IMO I would have him go get it looked at! It may not be the pencil itself that could cause infection, but if he is a carpenter and is around a lot of dirt, there may be a lot of stuff ON the pencil that would cause infection. If he is stubborn about going (like some FH can be) make sure he keeps the area clean and uses antibacterial cream like Neosporin to treat it. for him!

I'm a nurse... I hope this helps !!
I would take him to his primary care doctor not the ER because its not a medical emergency (plus you dont want him to wait there for hours!!) and have him take a look at it.
If it bothers him and it's an open wound it can turn into an infection.
Hope he feels better

Re: Question for Nurses (kinda stupid)

FH is also a carpenter (right now working in a scrap metal yard) and stuff like this happens all the time. He comes home with gashes in his body and has no idea how it happened. I would honestly just clean it REALLY good, and put antibacterial ointment(neosporin) on it. At that point I would just keep an eye on it. If you clean it really good, and it starts to scab up, he won't have much of a problem with getting it infected. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't look like it is getting infected. HTH

clean the site well and add antibacterial ointment. If it looks inflammed or more red in a couple of days, it could be infected. I would then call your doctor. hth

If it makes you feel any better, my cousin poked me with a pencil in my thumb when I was little and I still have the lead tip in me and nothing has happened. That was about 24 years ago! I'm so old

You definitely don't have to worry about any ill-effects from the pencil lead... they actually don't use real lead anymore... it's graphite, which I'm assuming is harmless.
