So I can't help but wonder - with the ridiculous cost of living here on this wretchedly overpriced island, what types of jobs do your DH's have that allow you to function on just one salary? If I could stay home once we have kids, I know I'd be much happier, but with our current salaries, it's ridiculous to even think of one of us not working right now! We've been talking about TTC a lot lately, and I honestly don't know how we would work it with our current jobs when DH works from 2 - 10 pm and I work from 7 - 7pm. I just can't see how that would work after maternity leave! I've been trying to get a job closer to home, but nothing is coming up that will pay me my current salary. Just a random thought, I'd love to know how this works for SAHMs though! FM if you want - thanks!!

Re: Question for SAHMs - just curious!
Well from my experience, we live in the bronx next to riverdale, and the rent is not that bad in comparison to other boroughs or even li. I have to tell you though, it's tough and we do struggle sometimes. That's why I'm starting a course online to become a medical billing specialist, so that I can work from home because otherwise it's tough but we have to be strick with money. We are nowhere near being rockefellers but we live comfortably. But hopefully when I'm done with the course, We will be better off. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to do what you really love, in this case being able to be with my daughter and see her grow up and change. It's priceless.

Re: Question for SAHMs - just curious!
we plan on trying to make it On dh salary and me possibly working nights part time- We live in a co-op though so we dont have a big mortgage and we dont have too many bills. We are going to be making a ton of sacrifices once the baby is here- but I really hope it works out for us. Daycare is really expensive and we couldnt afford it at all- so this really is the only option for us right now.

Re: Question for SAHMs - just curious!
thanks so much ladies! We are homeowners and live pretty comfortably right now, but it's bc we both work, are extrememly frugal with our spending, and DH hustles his butt off to constantly get more clients! (He's a private guitar instructor) He makes very good money, but his hours are crazy and most nights he doesn't get home until 10:00. Also, I have all the benefits and everything through my job, so unless DH got another job, ther's no way I could be a SAHM right now Luckily, TTC isn't something that we're doing at this time - but I would like to start later on this year/next year.... So many worries!!

Re: Question for SAHMs - just curious!
I am a SAHM on Long Island BUT that's only possible because we bought our house 7 years ago before the prices skyrocketed. Dh and I were actually just talking about this last night because the house across the street from us is for sale and were saying that with prices like this, it's got to be virtually impossible for anyone to stay home with the kids anymore. We were so lucky to buy when we did. Things are still tight with just one of us working and if we had to pay today's prices for a house, there would just be no way at all.

DH and I say the very same thing all the time!We bought our home for under 300K back in 2001. There are houses on our block that are selling for almost twice as much now!! We lucked out this time - DH wants our next home to be on the North Shore (closer to his parents) and my head just spins looking at some of those home prices!! I'm sure we'll find a way with both of us working when it comes time for baby - but I can't help but wonder at the same time.... Thanks!
