So I can't help but wonder - with the ridiculous cost of living here on this wretchedly overpriced island, what types of jobs do your DH's have that allow you to function on just one salary? If I could stay home once we have kids, I know I'd be much happier, but with our current salaries, it's ridiculous to even think of one of us not working right now! We've been talking about TTC a lot lately, and I honestly don't know how we would work it with our current jobs when DH works from 2 - 10 pm and I work from 7 - 7pm. I just can't see how that would work after maternity leave! I've been trying to get a job closer to home, but nothing is coming up that will pay me my current salary. Just a random thought, I'd love to know how this works for SAHMs though! FM if you want - thanks!!

Re: question for SAHMs (repost from NWR)
DH works for a hedge fund. But while it makes things easier financially, it's not easy (at least for me) to be a SAHM. DD is only 5 weeks old and colicy, so I think that's part of it, but DH leaves the house at 6am and doesn't get home until between 9 & 10pm. So he handles one feeding and then goes to bed, and I do everything else for her. Right now she's eating every 2 hours during the day (about 6am - 10pm) and then every 3-4 hours at night. It would be nice to have him home a little more to help out with DD. I feel very much like a single parent most of the time.

Re: question for SAHMs (repost from NWR)
My DH has a stake in his family's business. The down side to that is he works 7 days a week sometimes and 12 hours days and there are days he doesn't see Andrew. I am a SAHM, but I also work PT from home and in the office if I can. It's not easy at all. I also come from the school of thought that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. You need to do what's best for your family.

My DH owns his own business, which means very long hours sometimes Sometimes I get really upset with him because of that, but I know that he has to so I can be home with the kids and neither of us would have it any other way. I tried to go back to work when Jordan was 1 1/2 and it lasted for about 2 months and I couldn't take being away from him and we also realized with the cost of child care here, it just wasn't worth the piddly amount I was taking home.

thanks so much ladies! Craig is actually planning to turn his one-man show into a storefront business in the years to come - so I'm hoping that will be a success bc I would honestly love more than anything to be able to stay home with our children once we have them. Oh well, we still have time!

My DH works as an electricians apprentice... he doesnt make the best money, but we made it work. It was starting to get tight towards the end, and then we moved to Florida.. It is so affordable down here, and even though I took a PT job, i didnt NEED to..

DH is a IT Director for a finacial firm in NYC. But he also works long hours. Sometimes he goes 4 days without seeing DS. It upsets me at times but I know it's the only way that I can raise my own child which is very important to both of us.

Re: question for SAHMs (repost from NWR)
As someone else said...the key for us was not living in NY. We used to live in TX, now are in OH and we have a house we can afford with 3 beds/ 2.5 baths and a great yard for the kids. DH makes good money, but definately not good enough by NY standards...which IMO are ridiculous anyway. We still can vacation, and have an occasion night out...things we definately could not do if we lived on LI and I wasn't working. So, if you are up for leaving NY I would do it! I mean the real estate taxes themselves are absurd! I know people that escrow more each month for their taxes than I pay on my mortgage/escrow and homeowners insurance together. You just have to do what you feel is right for you and your family.
Oh and once you leave NY you will find that life is just as good or even better than in NY. I may not live 10 minutes from the beach anymore, but if we were in NY I would be working like a dog and wouldn't be able to relax at the beach anyway.

Re: question for SAHMs (repost from NWR)
I agree - it is so frustrating living here, which is why I wanted to know how you SAHMs manage to do it! I would LOVE to move to Florida actually....it would mean starting over from scratch career and friend wise, and ebing so far away form my mom and sisters who have alwasy been an hour away since I left home.... But at the same time, I know we would be able to provide so much more for our family if we weren't worknig liek dogs here in NY just to get by - forget about even saving anything!! Dh's grandpa actually lives down there and it woudl be nice to be close to another family member we don't get to visit as often. Just a dream though..... Thanks again for all the responses - the best idea seems to be get out of NY!
