Question for Teachers....

Hi Ladies and Gents!!!
I am doing my student teaching/observations and I have a question. Are teachers not allowed to mark in red pen anymore?

My cooperating teacher doesn't use red pen (3rd grade) but when I was in 6th grade a few weeks ago that cooperating teacher did - on everything.

I don't think it's that you're not allowed I just think many teachers prefer not to.

i use whatever pen is closest. It doesn't matter what color pen you use......it's what you write!!!

I usually use red or green but I find that the green tends to blend in with the darker writing.... Red just stands out the most!

Hey teachers, glad this thread got your attention I am scheduled to take the Praxis II exam in NJ in March. I have my BS in Business and have decided to pursue teaching. In NJ all you need to do for certification is pass the Praxis II. I got a study book and the sample test has very basic questions, but has some method questions ....do you know of any good study books? (in general - that reviews methods, etc)

Thanks!

MrsTC....Congrats! I just passed the NYState one. The LAST and it sucked!! Barrons and Kaplan books helped me the most.

To the other teachers...I ask because my professor told me teachers aren't allowed to write in red. They said it degrades the children and teachers can get a write-up for it.

That the dumbest thing I have EVER heard! I think that this one is taking it too far. It's about making the mark stand out, not degrading the child. ARGH! Stupid professors! Anyways, I, personally, use red pen and do do most of the teachers I've seen in my school.

About 2 years ago, we were told no red, but the 'rule' went out as quick as it came in. Around that time we were also told NEVER to write comments ON a student's paper, for the same reasons you mentioned above. This is the Dept. of Ed

I write with any pen/marker/coloered pencils that is within my range. I do however, try to not cross their writing out to make the corrections. I usually write it on a post-it.

There has been discussions about whether or not using red pen hurts their self-esteem. I know that red tends to be brighter but in all honesty if you are going to use that much red what is the difference with that much green, purple or orange????

In our school 99% of the teachers still use red, but I also use green, whatever is closest to my hand at the time.

i know in the school i did my student teaching we weren't supposed to use red ink... but green.

so now all we're going to have is a generation of kids that hate green ink on their papers.

If you cross out all their writing and rip their paper apart in BLUE ink it is going to have the same effect on the child.

I agree! What about the great grades that are written in red ink.... how does that affect kids negatively???????????

I always believe no matter how poorly a kid did on his paper/test- always point out something great they did. Help build self-esteem and shows them that they can do something right.
