Question for teachers

Question for teachers

Maybe I should be posting this on the parenting board, I don't really know, but here goes.
Yesterday, I got a call from my sons teacher that there was an 'incident' at school. (My son is 7 and in 1st grade) It seems another student went over to my sons table, with a pair of scissors and said to the little girl who sits there - 'I'm gonna cut your hair' At that point my son looked up and the kid looked at him and says 'What are you lookin at?' and proceeds to open the scissors and put them to my sons neck.
Needless to say I am very upset about this, and not sure what my rights are here. I want this kid out of the class - he probably will be suspended, but I want him out of the class, he was alreay a disruptive child - The kids sit in groups of four - and this child it seems has to sit alone.
I just really could use some advice as I don't know what my rights are but I need to do something. Please help.

Re: Question for teachers

I would be right down there knocking on the principal's door!!!

Where was the teacher or the aide? Is this the first time an situation has occurred?

Re: Question for teachers

This is the first time it happened with my son- they told me they are not allowed to disclose his history. The teacher was there - she didn't see it happen but she saw the look on the other kids face. My son would not have said anything if she didn't catch it. He was scared obviously - but he's the type of kid that doesn't 'tell' for some reason.
I have to think that this kid has done things before - he sits alone, not in a group because he is disruptive.

Re: Question for teachers

I would bet that the teacher wants the other boy out of the class too. Before you talk to the principal, go to the teacher. Maybe you can both speak to the principal about having the child removed from the class. As a parent, you are well within your rights to tell the principal that you feel as though your child is in danger being around the other child.

Definately speak to the principal about having the child removed from the class. If there is a history, then you don't want you son part of that.

Wow...I can't believe this is 1st grade...

Re: Question for teachers

Please, I know!! these are 7 year olds!
I'm currently waiting for the principal to get back to me - they are supposed to have a meeting with the other parents today. We did tell her if she couldn't guarantee my sons safety then we want the child out of the class. She hasn't responded to that yet!

I think that's the best thing you could have said! That leaves her no choice to have the other child removed.

Yeah, I have teachers conference anyway on Monday. So hopefully they will have more answers for me then.
Thanks for listening to me!

That kid needs to be evaluated for emotional problems. Maybe I am being hasty with that, but that is terribly scary to me, so I can imagine that it is to you also.

I would raise hell all the way to the superintendent.

I have had kids placed in my class and later I would find out that they did violent things, like one kid hurled a chair at the teacher. I had to find out from his mother because I think the school is not allowed to disclose that.

i have a similar situation in my classroom right now with a young boy. unfortunately he sets a whole negative tone in my class because of his behavior. he also sits out of the group next to me because he is bothering other students in the class.

Because he used a physical object towards your son, I would definately set up a meeting with the teacher, pricipal and psychologist and see how this can be handled.... im not sure how far you can go as far as getting removed from the class but you definately have to voice your anger. Otherwise unfortunately nothing will be done about it...

Re: Question for teachers

I agree with you 10000000000% that the child should be taken out of the class and could probably guarentee the teacher feels the same. But I want you to be prepared for something. IF this other child is classified the school will have to go through a long process. You HAVE to stay on them. But I can tell you from experience this:

We have a child in our school who is mentally disturbed. The public school setting is not the appropriate setting for this child but the parents don't want to see that there is anything wrong with him.

He was recently suspended for picking a fight with an African American boy in our school. He called him so many racial slurs and started to push and shove him. The African American boy (who is normally a really bad boy) knew that this kid had issues and as mad as he was kept telling him to back off. He didn't and they had a NASTY NASTY fight. The boy was suspend. While in inschool suspension he walked passed me on his way going to the bathroom and was being disruptive. When I told him to stop he threatened both me and the baby (he has had previously had VERY Aggressive acts towards other pregnant woman). I immediately told the principal and the dean. The school did NOTHING. I even went to the police. It was a huge ordeal. I wanted the child removed as did the other parents but because this child is classified he falls under the people with disabilities act. There is a whole hearing that must ensue and one of the things that I found out under the IDEA clause unless this child inflicts MAJOR and SEVERE physical damage to another he/she cannot be removed I hope that this is not the case with you but stay on top of them. Demand everything under the sun and if you have to go to the police.

Would you be willing to have your child be moved to another class?? I know that this might not be ideal but it might be a quicker resolution.

I hope that the principal can resolve the matter. Your child should NEVER EVER be subjected to something like that.

Re: Question for teachers

I'm sure the principal already knows about the incident from the teacher. I think you're doing the right thing having a conference with the teacher...he or she might be able to give you more insight about the interactions between your child and this other student. The child will probably visit with the school psyc. but you will not know the results of their meetings or evaluations the child may have. As a teacher, I do not think that you should take you child out of the class and the chances of the other child being taken out of the class are slim to none. The other child probably needs help and taking him out of the class will not help anybody involved.

Re: Question for teachers

I had a boy in my 2nd grade class like that last year. Parents would complain to me, and believe me I was doing everything I could to get him out. I kept telling the parents to put in official complaints about him, the more parents the better, but of course NO parents did, and he was with me all year!! (I work in a school with VERY VERY little parent involvement) It got to the point where he was throwing chairs at kids, threatening kids and me!!!! If I were you I would also talk to other parents in the class and possibly you all can complain about this boy together.

Re: Question for teachers

I just want to thank all of you ladies that responded - I'm so glad there are teachers here to ask!
Just to give an update, pretty much everyone was called to a meeting (except us of course), the school psychologist, social worker, cps was there, both principals, and I think the superintendent. For now, the child is suspended, he will not be allowed to return unless he gets a psychological evaluation, but they 'led' us to believe that he was going to be put in a different school, I think some kind of a special school, I'm not really sure they can't tell us much, which is understandable. But the principal was very cooperative and was really I think pushing to have the child removed from the school. I'm thinking that this incident was just the icing on the cake for this kid.
Again thank you all! You are all, as usual, very helpful!
