Question for teachers...

Original post by Betty

I am currently getting my masters in Elem Ed/Special Ed (dual degree). I am not a teacher nor am I in the field at all. My job is nice and easy and I often have off on Wed (4 day work week except when they need me) so it's better to do schoolwork.

I am thinking about quitting next year and being a TA. It will mean a hefty cut in salary (but I'll be married by then). I need more experience other than observing b/c I'm still scared to death that I can't do it and question myself every other day.
I'm hoping that by being in a classroom setting everyday I will begin to feel more comfortable.

QUESTIONS: Do you know if TAing for 2 years takes care of Student teaching? (I've heard this but don't know if it is true)

Does your years as a teacher (towards retirement) begin when you start TAing?

Does anyones schools use/need TAs??

Thanks so much

Christmasbride,

I do not want to sub. I am working in a NYC city school and it is so bad. I just want to get out ASAP!

Re: Question for teachers...

I have a list of all of the districts that are hiring for September. I got the list from Hofstra's ed. dept. There are way too many districts to type. If I can get FH to hook up the scanner I will try to scan it in.

About 2 years ago I subbed in a district and I did not have my certification at that time. My sister subbed as well and she did not even have a degree in anything education related. I think they required a college degree, but they did not care in what major. It might have changed since then.

christmasbride...is that just your district...I know my district takes anyone with 12 credits or more in anything...

also I think anyone with a BA can sub in NYS for up to 45 days a year (more if you are certified in any area)
