Question for Teachers and School Psychologists

Question for Teachers and School Psychologists

I recently asked for information on places to take a 10 year old for an eye exam. Well, I took her today. The opthamologist tested her and she has perfect vision.

He suggested that she be tested for a learning disorder based on what she described to him. She says that when she looks at letters on the board, they seem to move back and forth and then after awhile while it 'drops' back in place.

Have any of you teachers or school psychologists ever heard of anything like this?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of the name of a specific learning disability that would fit that description, but it very easily could be some sort of LD. Learning Disabilities are generally neurologically based, and what you are describing sounds like it may have some neurological basis. When I get a chance, I will look it up.

sometimes the overhead lighting is so bright that it messes with vision. from my own experience, it is hard for me to read black text on white pages with flourescent lighting. however, she should be tested for dyslexia too b/c it sounds like it could be a sympton. either way, the sooner she get tested, the better b/c any later and she may become so frustrated she will not want help and that will not help her education. good luck!

I think that if you feel there is something interfering with her ability to get an education than you should persue all avenues. You can approach the school psych. about an eval. and to formally request and eval. you need to put the request in writing. You may also want to look into whether your child should see a Develomental Optometrist (different than an pediatric opthamologist) who deal more with developmental (behavioral, functional or environmental) aspects of vision and different interventions. Do a search to find out more about what they can do. I don't know your child and can't specifically suggest what kind of testing or specialists she may need to see but I thought I'd just suggest some different avenues for you to explore. Good Luck!

I agree with Sasha... definitely pursue a evaluation through the school psychologist at school and also the medical evaluations. I'm sure if you do research online you will be able to find some information about it, or maybe someone who specializes in it.

Just as an FYI - make sure the school psych. is aware of this, so they can do an accurate eval, not just IQ and academic stuff. AT least to rule out if it is affecting her school work. It might also be helpful to have a neuro psych. eval done... the schools don't do that, but there are private psychologists (someone with a Ph.D) who can do that, which will also give you more info.

Unfortunately, I can't find the books from my learning disabilities class..they must still be at my parents house.

I agree with whomever said to go to a developmental optomotrist. My nephew has an appointment to see one soon b/c of visual-motor deficits.

A good school psychologist might do some neuropsych testing, but it is unusual that they will go as in depth as a private psychologist or some place like NYU child study center would.

I don't know where you live or if this would be convenient, but the training clinic at Pace University in Manhattan provides neuropsych testing...it's done by 3rd or 4th year grad students and supervised by a licensed psychologists. The evals are very thorough and as of last year, cost $600, which is cheaper than most private testing will cost. FM me if you have any questions. The number of the clinic is 212-346-1330.

If you're going to pursue a neuropsych eval be careful who does it. They should be done by a clinical neuropsychologist not just any Ph.D that does neuropsych testing. Good luck to you.
