I created notetaking guides for my 5th graders when doing lectures, reading from the book but it doesn't seem to help them. I'm still getting 'wait, what do i write' even though they've read it in the book, the guide tells them what to write, and i've restated it for them.
I'm really getting worried that they'll crash next year when they really need to take notes in middle school.
Do you have any ideas/lessons that have worked when trying to help kids take notes?
Thanks!

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
I actually did the same thing for my third graders. My principal requested that I do that in the classroom to prepare them for the ELA's. Obviously, we took notes on interesting movies at first and then moved to textbooks.

Unfortunately, I don't know if the lessons ever work! I teach high school and I rarely see anyone writing anything down unless I put it on the board.
My lesson is, 'Ummmm...I think you should be writing this down now.'
I wouldn't mind some advice on this too, although it might be too late now!!

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
I'm a 7th grade teacher in Philly...but I think a good way would be to have them write an outline first...have them look at the section you will be reading from the book...pick out bold words that will be important....write each section name in their notebook spaced out and then they can fill in notes in each section - then you're covering note taking and outlining in one lesson....remind them that things that you repeat or stress with your voice are important and things that you pause to ask them questions about also!

We watched that in my class too! You might want to have a few set questions or give them a focus during the video.

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
I always teach my kids to write down
who what where when why how and *other important info.... if they can't answer the questions that apply, they do not understand the reading....

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
Have you tried modeling it for them on an overhead or chart paper? I used to do this with my 8th graders when I was getting them ready for the ELA. I would pick someone who read well and have that child read aloud. The rest of the kids would watch me take notes. Modeling is a huge thing in my school and I have always found that it helps the kids to 'see' it happening first.

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
i learned how to organize notes by watching my teacher do it on the overhead with us. I do this with my students and i can only hope they will continue doing it without me. It has to be something that is not a unit but reinforced the entire year. they will pick it up without realizing it and slowly towards the end you can ween then off. I teach high school and they still have difficulty with it but we've been working on it and hopefully it will pay off.

A jot box is if you set up the notes for the kids you have them stop, draw a box on their paper and have them write down something about what they learned in the last X amount of minutes.
I hope this makes sense. If it doesn't let me know I will try again.

Re: Question for teachers: notetaking
One of my friends has each child in her class keep a pack of post-its ion their desk to write down interesting ideas and vocab from their novels. She did a lesson on note taking and everything with them. I think she has them write the notes from the post-its into a reading notebook after.

yeah, i've done that before, i think it would work for some, but i have a lot of low kids in my class... they're having enough time trying to figure out what to write down for them, and it's spelled out on the notes.
