Question for The Married Ladies

Question for The Married Ladies

Rob and I got quite a few checks that were made out to 'Mr and Mrs. Style'.

We have had a joint checking account for a while. Obviously it has Robert Style and my first name and maiden name on it. When we went to the bank they said we could only deposit the checks that were made out to either me or to him - but not the ones that were made out to Mr & Mrs. Robert Style or Mr. & Mrs. Steil.

I am CONVINCED this has to be wrong... I mean - what if I hadn't decided to take his last name? What if we didn't have and chose never to get a joint account. I know there have to be some ladies on here who did not take their husband's last names or who didn't have a joint checking account.

How did you handle this challenge?

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

hmmmmm we just recieved a few checks from No's that wrote them out to Mr. and Mrs. 'Jones'... we were going to go take them to the bank today without even thinking twice about it and deposit it into our savings account with my maiden name still there obviously since we arent married yet. So I will let you know how it goes.

I'm pretty sure you just sign them and despoit them. I don't think it'll be an issue.

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

That just doesn't sound right to me.....a check written in two names should only require one signature....so if your DH's name is on the check as Mr.Style, there shoudn't be any issues....we had gift checks written in all kinds of names......Mr.&Mrs, his name,my name,my name hyphenated w/his name.....we didn't have any problems......Try calling your bank and speaking w/a manager on their policies.....GL

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

A friend of mine who used to work in a bank told me that it doesn't matter...you can even write only their first names. But maybe your bank has some stricter rules. I would definitely call the head branch or someone higher up, bc there is no reason that you should not be able to deposit those puppies! They are jipping you out of interest! You should mention that you are considering putting your money in another bank if they continue to give you a hard time.

Our officiant made a copy of our wedding certificate before he left and gave it to us so we took that to the bank and didn't have a problem - do you have a copy?

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

We had a joint checking account with our individual names on it as well and we were able to deposit the checks made out to 'Mr. & Mrs. W' without an issue. Even though it is my maiden name on the account.

We are with Wachovia.

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

i just endorsed the back and deposited them in one lump sum. the teller didnt even bother to go thru the checks individually. it shouldnt really matter since his name appears on the account. to this day i still havent changed my name and i deposit checks that people make payable to Emily D and not my maiden name.

ETA: we use Washington Mutual

As far as I know, i worked at a bank about a few years ago. We were able to allow members to deposit their checks. The only thing is that th echecks had a 5 - 10 day hold. I don't know if the rules changed since then, but i guess we all better find that out to keep that in mind. Good luck!

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

that is wrong and go back to argue that.....we had the same issue and who signs last on the endorsement side should be the 'owner' of the account....so if it says MR & MRS and its his account for ex he signs it u sign it and he signs it again...thats exactly what we had to do

We each endorsed all of the checks. I wrote the checks with my maiden name as my middle name for all of the 'Mr and Mrs' checks. We did not have one problem.

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

you can sign them 'for deposit only'
or he can sign 'john doe' and then you sign first w/ your maiden name 'jane smith' and then your married name 'jane doe'.

that's what commerce bank told us to do.

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

I think you should just signed the check either for deposit only, or sign both your maiden name and his last name. If you aren't taking his last name, I don't think you should be offended that people wrote the check out to Mr. and Mrs. You can't assume everyone is going to think to themselves, ' I wonder if she is going to take his last name' especially when most people do. They were just trying to congratulate you. If you aren't taking his last name, I wouldn't make an issue out of it. Just explain to people for the future that you would rather keep your maiden name.

I work at a bank and all we require is your marriage certificate, and if its your main branch(where you guys opened the acct) they should have done it because you guys have a joint acct, I would talk to a manager

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

i didn't have this problem.... we put them all in my bank account and he co-signed and the bank said for him to put his driver's license # on the back of the check... but honestly, they didn't even check. they understood it was wedding gifts... we depostied over 100 checks.

I would go to a different branch of your bank and try again. I wouldn't think that should be a problem.

My FH works for Commerce and he said it shouldnt be a problem. We received a few checks for our eparty and they were made out to Kristen P and Ronald P and we were able to deposit them into our acct.
