Question for The Married Ladies

Original post by rojerono

Rob and I got quite a few checks that were made out to 'Mr and Mrs. Style'.

We have had a joint checking account for a while. Obviously it has Robert Style and my first name and maiden name on it. When we went to the bank they said we could only deposit the checks that were made out to either me or to him - but not the ones that were made out to Mr & Mrs. Robert Style or Mr. & Mrs. Steil.

I am CONVINCED this has to be wrong... I mean - what if I hadn't decided to take his last name? What if we didn't have and chose never to get a joint account. I know there have to be some ladies on here who did not take their husband's last names or who didn't have a joint checking account.

How did you handle this challenge?

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

We deposited checks made out that way before we even had a joint account!
We both signed them, and I had to sign both ways - maiden and married. My sister deposited all the checks for us while we were on our honeymoon and she had no problems.

I don't know why your bank is telling you that. Deposit them in the ATM machine and that's it...There will be no one telling you you can't do it...lol I had NO problems with my bank what so ever. I have PNC.

When I deposit checks, I almost never sign my signature. I write 'Deposit Only' and the account number on the back.

I had to sign them twice - once in my maiden name and once in my married name.
We had a joint account, though.

If you took his last name, cant you just change your name on the account? (wouldn't you plan to do that anyway?) then you would have no trouble depositing them...

Re: Question for The Married Ladies

Well we went on the Monday after our wedding and opened up a joint account and deposited all the checks. For the ones made out as Mr. & Mrs. we both had to sign and i had to sign my name as a hyphenated since it hadn't officially been changed. There were some checks as Mr or Mrs and DH just signed those. You do have to vary on how you sign them based on how they are written out, but banks will take the checks. I suggest going to a different teller. banks are totally used to people coming in after their weddings with checks to deposit.
