Question for the more experienced wedding planners
Hey... We got engaged a little over 2 weeks ago and already we secured our hall and date, and this week we will be deciding on a photographer.
We arent getting married until 08, so I was just curious if by planning early we are missing out on the whole excitement of planning a wedding?
I know for us, we'd love to have everything planned and paid for by year's end so we dont have to worry about it and concentrate on getting a house next year..... but are we missing out on getting things wrapped up so quickly?
I don't know... ive heard stories of people waiting so close to last minute and being all stressed out, so I am glad that is not going to be us....
but any advice or insight is greatly appreciated..
thanks, Regina & Brian

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
had we had as much time as you do, i would've gotten it all out of the way much quicker and simply enjoyed my engagement...although my DH, the procrastinator would've seen it as a more ample reason to NOT work on it!
i have a friend who isn't getting married for a year and she's pretty much DONE. i commend her for that. i wish my DH had cooperated and allowed me to plan like crazy at first and then just sit back for the home stretch!!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
We got engaged in Dec of 2004 and our wedding was in May of this year. We started planning a few weeks after getting engaged and it was really nice that we were able to do thing at a slow pace. We were pretty much finished booking things by summer of 2005 and were able to relax and not have to think about wedding things for 6 months or so, which was really nice. You aren't missing out on anything, don't worry!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
I'm not an experienced planner by any means, but I think you're going about your planning the right way. Certain things though you won't be able to do until your date gets closer, so you'll be able to enjoy the planning as your date gets closer, but you won't be stressing out. My FH & I are doing the same thing. GOOD LUCK!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
Hi Regina,
For me planning early is good expecially with the large vendors!! There is going to be soooo much of the little things that you will working on throughout! I think getting all the main vendors done is good.... I would rather have it done than worry and be all stressed! I would enjoy the process of being engaged also... you don't have to have it all done this month ~ since you have the hall you can do one or two vendors a month....
Happy Planning!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
We got engaged last August and had a good deal of the major things booked or decided upon by December. IMO it's nice to get things done early if you can because you get a better choice of vendors and you can have some time to relax before crunch time. It's still an enjoyable and exciting experience, it's just less stressful

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
I think you are smart b/c if you wait until next year or '08, the prices are going to go up. If you don't want to definitively book everything this year and save some for later, my only suggestion to you is to get quotes now at the very least. That way you have them locked in at this year's prices. HTH and congratulations!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
if you book a lot of things now, you'll lock in this year's prices, which is a plus (obviously).
However, I booked a florist immediately because I was SO excited to plan SOMETHING and probably jumped the gun on that. I ended up having to cancel him and book the florist I ended up falling in LOVE with after I learned more on this site.
The best thing you could have done was to join this site so early on in your wedding planning process!

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
We did everything right away - we had 18 months to plan but I was happier knowing what we needed to pay and knowing it was DONE! Also, we didn't have a problem where anyone we wanted was already booked.

thanks again everyone....
Kim, what are some of the things I wont be able to plan until the date gets closer?
My FH has been honestly doing most of the planning... he just wanted me to be happy with where we were getting married and he wanted me to have the 'this is where i want to get married' feel... I didnt have that immediate reacion at some of the other places... but when I went to Swan Club... i loved it...
He is handling the photography this week and next week, and then we plan to look at DJ's next.
I am sure there is one somewhere, but I havent found it... but is there some kind of wedding planning checklist on here that might be of help?
thanks

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
My fh and I are getting married next June. We have a lot of the major stuff done already. We have the hall, the photographer DJ and I have my dress too. Really it hasnt been that stressful for me yet. I think planning early is really a good deal.

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
I planned my own wedding in 6 months & it was a nightmare. My sister is also getting married in '08 (I am her MOH) and we xare trying to have everything planned & done by the end of the year. We found a bridal shop that will store the dresses so we do not need to worry about that, and have already secured the hall, ordered her dress & my dress. The BMs are ordering their dress at the end of October (alot of the girls wanted to try to slim down a bit before ordering). We are now working on Photo, video, & flowers. We made the STDs & are sending them next week. (almost the whole wedding is from OOT). We already have the EP planned.
I think you know what pace is good for you. If you want popular vendors, you may need to book them 2 years in advance, especially if it is for a Saturday night wedding.
Congrats & Good luck

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
I'm definitely not very experiened... I've only been engaged for a month! But... we have already booked our hall, photographer, dj, and florist. and, i've ordered my dress!
i'm in my last year of my master's and will be taking 15 credits this semester, plus doing an externship (like an internship... but for speech pathology we do an internship at our school's clinic, so our outside placement are called externships)... so I know that I'll be very busy during the semesters... I figured I would get as much done before school starts (tomorrow!) as I could!
I don't think I'm missing out.... I enjoy all this planning, and it feels great not having to rush or stress

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
The only thing I can suggest is TAKE YOUR TIME WITH THE DRESS. Its the only thing I regret being too quick with. It was the funnest part and I really didnt do it for that long. Plus so many new styles come out. Other than that, do it as you feel comfortable.

Re: Question for the more experienced wedding planners
blisswedding.com has a great mini-wedding planner and checklist which you can print . it's very nice...
i think it's great that you have the place booked already. just don't go back and look at anymore... i found my place after looking at 10, most ly in westchester and jersey, only 1 in Long Island and I booked it right away. Kinda wished i had looked at more.
Same with photographer, wish i had researched more. I think it's important to make sure you've researched thoroughly 'cus you will hear about wonderful vendors used by the girls here and it may make you wish you had booked them instead. :(
