Question for those who have gotten their dresses made by a seamstress....

How soon did you have her start? I went 2 or 3 weeks ago to talk to her and pretty much have decided to go that way - since I am so friggin' picky.

Anyway, my wedding is in June 2004 and all she kept telling me is 'no worries, you have plenty of time'

She is ordering me swatches right now- But seriously when should she make it? I have been the same weight forever- so I am not worrying about gaining or losing- so the alteration part is pretty much taken out of the equation by having it custom made.

Help!

my dress is being customed made and i left the deposit on Saturday for my Sept 2004 wedding

I am getting resized in January, first fitting in late April, second fitting in July and my third and final fitting late august beginning of September. Dress will be ready a week before my wedding.

Ask her how long will it take to make, how is her work load, how long does it normally take her to do a gown, when should you start your fittings.

Those may take a big factor. If she says it will take her 3 months then you may want to start in November or December, giving her 3 months time to make it and some time if you dont like something it can be changed and allow time for your fittings.

I think 6 - 9 months prior to the wedding is good for a gown.

Thanks so much! I will go back then in the next couple of weeks to decide on a fabric and ask her - September will be 9 months so maybe I'll have her start between then and November....

I made my arrangements in January for our November wedding. She says it will be completed in September but I'll let her keep it until closer to time. As long as she has it she says all my alterations will be covered in the price to have the dress made.

Mine is a seamstress in Ridgewood. She owns a dry cleaners and has doen amazing jobs on poeple I know. If you would like her info- FM me

I'm having my dress custom made as well.
I went 2 months ago for my first fitting. ( wedding is Oct. 19th)
I'm going in Sept. for my 2nd one & the first week of Oct. for the last??? Hopefully. If not, the week of the wedding.
A year ago, I just went to give her pictures and ideas and had her sketch the dress
