Question: Green Card, Passport, Foreign Birth Certificate....?
Me, Im all true blue Texan..err American hehe
But im having issues with FH. He's been a Long Islander almost all his life. He's been in NY State since he was 3 and served in the US Air Force.
Problem: Green card - Shows him when he was 10 (so cute btw) and I don't think it's good anymore. Passport - Came to American under his mother's passport and has never needed one. (Technically it's British) Birth Certificate - This Im not sure about yet, his mother has it in a safe box at a bank. I should see it by Thursday. It may not be in English.
Ok so we were SUPPOSED to go get our marriage license tomorrow, but that's out since he doesn't have a second form of ID. You need 2, plus SS card. He has a SS card but other than the Birth Certificate, no second ID. Technically me, neither. I have no passport and must use my birth certificate as second form of ID.
Question: Anyone here gotten a green card so late in life? How hard is it? Also, since he has a really old Green card (which I think is useless) and no passport should I be overly worried?
Any insight would be great! I take my citizenship for granted. Marriage stuff has me asking questions. PS: He's British since he was born in Hong Kong when it was still owned by the UK. I think these days they are giving such citizens duel citizenship Chinese/British, not sure.
sorry so long.

First you need to find out if his green card is valid. Also, is he a permanent resident? You need to find all this out...my Fi is English and we are going through all this right now. FM me for more info.
I'll be glad to help you...

Is he a permenant resident of the US? My DH is a peremenant resident..,his card has his picture since he was about 13. He used that to get our marriage licence. His Green card did not have a expiration date on it.

thats what he used!!
I think that the card is issued to a person for life...or until he/she becomes a citizen.
We went for ours in Massapequa. Its a small town hall and it was really quick!!
BTW...my husband is getting sworn in as a citizen of the USA tomorrow morning!! I am so proud of him!! (that is me beaming!!)

Permanent Resident ID is fine. You said he served in the military - does he still have military ID that he can use that is more recent? That might work as well.

Jann, Yeah, I think he has his old military Id somewhere. I'll have him dig it up.
I looked that greencard over back to front could find no expiration date. We still need to update his.
I really don't think he'll give up his British citizenship for US citizenship especially as Im a die hard Republican. I think he likes not being able to vote so we can discuss but not argue politics. Why bother, he can't vote. He also can't serve jury duty.
He's told me before the only reason he has no US citizenship is laziness. His mother and father got their US citizenship and remarried in the US after the birth of their second son. FH's little brother & little sister (born later) are both US Citizens. He's the only one whose not. heh.
Most important part is that we BOTH need passports!

So FH, if he were a citizen, would be a Democrat? Tell him to get his ass to the nearest INS office and become a citizen, darn it!
Mental note to self: do not discuss politics with Veronica.

If he served in the AirForce, why can't he use his military ID?

Veronica, I just realized that you're getting your marriage license tomorrow, and I was thinking, 'Huh? You can't get your license over a year in advance!' I totally forget you're getting married this year first...when's the big day??? Are you excited?

Note to self: Review Jann's invitation status. J/K.
Nah I don't think he'd be democrat.. I think he just finds it amusing I can't really argue about politics with him.
Im a big believer... stop whining and vote, if you didn't vote then shut up, sit down and deal with it.
Although.... he's been with me each time I go vote and he is horrified how terrible the whole process is (at least for me it was in Queens) and he always wonders why I bother to take the time and effort each year. We'll see if it's better in Long Island now that im registered out here. Great thing is im in a Republican district. Whooohooo.
ETA: Jann's an attorney.. why WOULD I talk politics with her anyway??? heh

Hey, I may be an attorney, but I have no political aspirations! I'd rather chop my pinky toes off than run for public office of any kind. And I love talking politics with people who can discuss them rationally and with intellectual reasoning in tact. It's interesting to hear other points of view, as long as it can be kept civil, which is often hard to do.
I think it's so great that you guys are getting married on the pre-1 year anniversary of your wedding! Are you going on a mini-honeymoon?

Jann, So, we'll talk.
Mini-honeymoon. We're both taking that Thursday (the 23rd) off and Im taking the 24th off. No real mini-honeymoon, just dinner and a good bottle of wine. Need to save cash for the bigger honeymoon! hehe

Yep.. we're planning on going to the Hempstead Town Hall on Friday for the Marriage License and try to book a Justice of the Peace for the 23rd. You wanna be a witness? hehe
We were going to let them bring in clerks or whatever.

according to the terribly rude woman on the phone, we will be given that information when we get our marriage license. *ahem*
Freaking Wench of a woman! &*^%$^#!!
Ok feel better know. I'll let you know when on our big day we plan to get it done. I guess it depends on when those Justices have time.
