So far breast feeding has been going great, but DH wants to help feed her, so I tried the Advent manual pump and get nothing. I am thinking to purchase the Medela Pump in Style double electric pump since I will also try to pump when I return to work, but am scared to spend the $$ and have it not work either. Has anyone found that only electric pumps work for them, or is there some trick to the manual ones? Thanks for the help!

Re: question on breast pumps...
I have the Medela Pump In Style Traveler pump... It works great! The hand held one's take too long. I use this one at work for the past 10.5 months. It's quick and painless.

Re: question on breast pumps...
I have used the Medela Pump-in-style since my first born 5 years ago, and I love it! It is not painful, it gives realistic sucking, and it is in a convenient carrying case. Invest in it, it;s worth it, especially if you;re thinking about pumping at work, it usually takes 1/2 the time compared to other pumps. Keep on pumping, the demand will increase your supply!

Re: question on breast pumps...
There are different electric pumps so be careful NOT to get one of the cheapo ones. You can buy a PIS (pump in style) or PISA (pump in style advance) on eBay from The Leche Connection for $100 LESS than BBB/BRU. A new, factory sealed, warrantied pump. NEVER buy a used one.
I never got a darn thing with that Advent but I was able to milk with the Medela free hand pump that comes with the PIS/PISA. I used it when I rented a hospital grade pump and we traveled to my MIL's house 4 hours away.
1 month of formula is more expensive than a good quality breast pump so you are already saving money...and giving your daughter a wonderful gift.

Re: question on breast pumps...
Im curious, why do you say NEVER buy a used one? I purchased a used Medela PIS for about 40$ and it works awesome. Is there a reason why the pump itself should not be bought used - it does not come into contact with anything, it is basically just a motor/pump? I purchased new tubing, suction cups and containers from buy buy baby, and it cost me a lot less than buying a new pump. i DEFINITELY agree that you can buy a brand new Medela pump in a sealed box on ebay for much less that in the store - I did that also (I keep one at work). I tried hand pumping also, it was horrible (took so long for almost no return) - but I had no problems with the Medela pump, and it's a great time saver since you do both at once. Good luck!

Re: question on breast pumps...
I know may people who buy used pumps, I think people just need to be very vigilant to make sure it has been cleaned well. It is most recommended to buy a used pump from a medical supply store. If there is a back flow the milk can reverse through the tubing and can go into the front see-though shield of the motor. You can see for yourself that condensation occurs after you clean the tubing and plug it in to the motor to help dry them, sometimes the water is sucked back into the shield. I personally would not buy a used product, but I have never heard of any cases where there were problems. Some hospitals even encourage purchase of a used machine to encourage long-term breastfeeding, especially since they know they are costly.

You can buy a used one.. but you HAVE to buy all new tubes, brest shields, anything that would comein contact with your milk.. it is not satritary. You actaully should rent one if you really want to try it... I know somwe local none chain pharmacies do.. My dad does at his store
