i bought my dress at princess bridals in farmingdale ... they are the worst people ever and i regret buying my dress there.
Anyway, i will not be paying them a penny more than i have to and will, therefore, take my dress elsewhere for alterations.
question is - when they call me to say the dress came in, do i pick it up immediately and store it at my house until it's time to get altered? or do i have them hold onto it until i'm ready?
TIA

I'd let them hold onto it for as long as is possible. I won't be picking mine up from Paradise until the week of the wedding.

oooh thats a tough one! when did they tell you it will be coming in? If its coming in soon, I'd be so nervous storing it myself for a long time!

it *should* be coming in around May or June ... so i'll need to start alterations pretty shortly after that, right?

My dress came in super early, so I've been storing it at home.
If you get a bad vibe from a place then take it out of there immediately.

Since you said you are unhappy with the store, I'd go right away to check the dress and make sure everything is okay with it. I'd then bring it home until you are ready to have it altered.
You can get a muslin dress bag to store it in or cover it with a white cotton sheet. Don't store it in a plastic garment bag as that is not good for the material.
I had my dress in my house for a few months before I started alterations. My dad, who is retired, was under orders to save the dress if there was a fire!! LOL
