Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?

Just wondering what the consensus is on this issue.
I feel like its so expensive for these trials!!!
And its adding up so fast. I wish they offered free trials lol

I had a trial last night, and i didnt tip.
Will post pics sunday after my 3rd makeup trial .
to compare.

Anyway it was 70 dollars. for about an hour.
I liked the makeup, but i just didnt want to shell out anymore money. Was this rude? And what would of been a standard tip?

hm. I tipped for the trial, but I just felt I had to. If you know the person is getting the money directly (and not the salon) then I think you can get away without tipping.

i tipped 20%

for my first hair trial i didnt tip because shes the owner but for my 2nd hair trial and makeup trial i tipped $10 each because it was in a salon but then again my trials were only $45 each

I didn't tip for my make-up trial because I went to the person's house. Plus once she was done, I knew that I was goign to book her for my wedding, so I didn't feel the need to tip her when i'll be dishing out a lot more money during my wedding time and she'll receive a tip then.

I tipped for my first hair trial but then when I thought about it the money is going straight into their pockets.. the second i didnt' becuase I am pretty sure I am booking with her! I think if the money is going staright to them it's already enough money that we are shelling out!

I feel like if you are seeing and independant make up artst who works for herself you shouldn't have to tip! Also, for a trial, he/she just made 70$

come on!

I have a makeup trial tomorrow and I am not tipping. She works for herself and I am going to her home - that's $50 she just made for only using a bit of her makeup .. so I don't think you need to.

I'm so glad you said that, I'm going tomorrow to someone's house and I was thinking that I shouldn't need to especially if I'm goign to book them. Thanks.

Yes all the Makeup Artists I have/had appts with all worked for themself.

Its just really adding up....and then if you want airbrush its extra, a few false lashes is like 20 bucks extra lol.
I mean it took 5 seconds to put them on. and they dont last they come right off the next day

I agree. Unless you are going to a salon where it wasnt straight to their pockets, in that case i would tip something.

But i feel all your frustrations...u can easily spend 200+ dollars and hoair/makeup trials alone!

Im going to virginia....my friend got her hair done beauitfully and it was 45 for the bride!!!

Mine was awesome and it was 25...

I tip no matter what...Owner or not, honestly most ppl tip the owner lol. IM sure theres many of you who get your hair done regularly at a salon and if by chance its the owner i am sure you will tip them. My mom has owned a few salons and honestly i would say 99% of people always tipped her. Ive had my hair done by owners at other places and again i tip them too.

But again i am just a person who always tips with alot of things.

I guess since my mom is in that line of business and know that its tips that you really make a living off of, i feel differently.

at a salon, the salon provides you with your products so you dont have to pay for any of that. The owner orders all these things for you and owner pays. If you are independent first you have less clients and 2 you have to pay for everything yourself. All your supplies are out of pocket

that was the rationale i used for tipping the last two girls i had trials with - I figured they'd have to pay for all the supplies themselves, one was just starting out, etc. it's too hard for me not to tip, i'd feel guilty.

I didnt tip for either (hair & makeup)

Both were done at THEIR homes, and NO ONE was getting a cut of it, besides them.

The price is inflated ENOUGH since WE ARE BRIDES....dont feel bad - they're making LOTSSSS of $$ off of us, lol

WELL everyone is entitled to their opinion on this and just do what feels right to you. Personally i just couldn't do it, like i said before my mom is in that industry and i see first hand how it is. Even as the owner its not like you get to keep all this money lol. I tip for every service, even cab drivers and anything you can think of. Again, like i said above, its very very very rare my mom didn't get tipped. But ive seen this happen and hear how the employees at salons talk, i also worked at one when i was younger. If they don't get tipped they feel a certain way towards it.

I tipped for all my hair and m/u trials. Even the ones who worked for themselves and at their homes. I think you should ALWAYS tip. I tip everyone, maybe that's cause I used to wait tables, but whatever. Whether they take it or not is their choice. But they are performing a personal service, like a waiter, or a valet or a delivery guy or a manicurist.....or a normal hair-m/u person in a salon. You would never NOT tip these people normally so why stiff them now???? I never understand this, I'm sorry.

i know I am going to tip and it is my cousin who is doing the trials....I used to waitress and some people owners or not all depend on their tips...

its funny bc i feel a little bit differently. I feel at a salon they get many more clients. I mean in a day they'll see LOTS of people. When you work from home, you dont have as many clients i wouldnt even say half the amount you would in a salon ya know.
