Just wondering what the consensus is on this issue. I feel like its so expensive for these trials!!! And its adding up so fast. I wish they offered free trials lol
I had a trial last night, and i didnt tip. Will post pics sunday after my 3rd makeup trial . to compare.
Anyway it was 70 dollars. for about an hour. I liked the makeup, but i just didnt want to shell out anymore money. Was this rude? And what would of been a standard tip?

Re: Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?
I tipped at every trial. But it is definitely adding up! I tipped 20% but I think for my next hair trial and makeup trial I might do %15 or something it is just too much money and I am already booked with them book just never had a hair trial. And for my makeup this will be my 2nd trial with her to just see which colors I like better.
Plus I am paying for hundreds of dollars for school books right now plus certification testing so i am in deep with spending and i cant afford to shell out so much
but maybe $5 instead of a $10 tip because I feel bad not tipping

Youve gone multiple times so dont feel bad. I think even $5 is fine its just a way to say thank you. I think that when its a service provided that normally people tip, when someone doesn't the person might wonder why, and whether the person liked the work or something. Even in other parts, like if youre a waiter and a table leaves no tip.
Again these are my personal feelings on the issue and just my outlook. Dont expect others to feel the same way

Yes all the Makeup Artists I have/had appts with all worked for themself.
Its just really adding up....and then if you want airbrush its extra, a few false lashes is like 20 bucks extra lol. I mean it took 5 seconds to put them on. and they dont last they come right off the next day
really? i had three different trials and they never charged me extra for lashes - I'm surprised they did that. I thought it's usually built into the price

Re: Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?
so if I go for a 2nd trial it's ok to give a little less? I planned on getting a 2nd hair trial, last time I gave $10, I can give $5 this time without offender her?

i think if you already booked her it's fine. I want to go back to for another one, and I'd still tip but probably not as much.

I didnt tip for either (hair & makeup)
Both were done at THEIR homes, and NO ONE was getting a cut of it, besides them.
The price is inflated ENOUGH since WE ARE BRIDES....dont feel bad - they're making LOTSSSS of $$ off of us, lol
WELL everyone is entitled to their opinion on this and just do what feels right to you. Personally i just couldn't do it, like i said before my mom is in that industry and i see first hand how it is. Even as the owner its not like you get to keep all this money lol. I tip for every service, even cab drivers and anything you can think of. Again, like i said above, its very very very rare my mom didn't get tipped. But ive seen this happen and hear how the employees at salons talk, i also worked at one when i was younger. If they don't get tipped they feel a certain way towards it.
Yeah, I just feel differently about it....going to a salon is a different story...IMO
its funny bc i feel a little bit differently. I feel at a salon they get many more clients. I mean in a day they'll see LOTS of people. When you work from home, you dont have as many clients i wouldnt even say half the amount you would in a salon ya know.
Yeah, I get what ur saying...but working out of the home provides more convenience to hair dresser/makeup artist. Yeah, they may be seeing less ppl in a day, but THEY'RE HOME. They schedule ppl around their own schedule; they could schedule 3 ppl or 8. I understand that ur mother is in the business so you have a different perspective - but HEY that's what LIW is all about - getting different points of view!!!

Re: Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?
I'm a tipper in general, no matter where I go. I was a waitress at two catering halls and busted my butt and hated when I didn't get tips. Believe it or not, I got tips once in a while and really resented the job because of it. I mean, making like 7 bucks an hour really required good tips for a decent paycheck!
I'm defintely tipping and unless they refuse, plan on giving them a lunch-worth of money AT LEAST!

Re: Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?
The first trial i had for hair and makeup were free in the city. I tried tipping them but they refused to take the money.
The second trial I had for hair and makeup was 50 dollars each. I didnt tip them becuase the money goes directly to them and i paid for their servies.
I had my third makep trial this yesterday and she refused a tip. I also ended up booking her.
If you still dont like any of your trial fm me. I had an ausome makeup person who doesnt charge for eylashes ect.

Future Mrs. M, I'm feeling like you as well. It adds up, I had to have three makeup trials before getting it right...for me, get it right the first time or I'm on to the next person, so the third person got it right and I booked her

I pretty much did the same thing- I feel bad I went to the salon where the makeup artist works at and we had the trial there- the hairstylist left before I had a chance to tip her but I bought an eye cream (my outer eyelids and around my eye get really dry) so she made more $$ off me that day too.
I did book on the spot though and it was the first and only trial I had to do.

Re: Question- Tipping at Makeup/Hair Trials?
I'm sorry if any of you think I'm starting trouble here, but after reading some of these posts I HAVE to comment some more.....
Yes, 2, 3 or 10 trials ARE a lot.....is it THEIR fault that you need so many trials? No....
They are hoping that you'll love their work as much as they do and they really spend their time dedicating themselves to making YOU happy....that's worthy of a tip any day!
If you think it's too much because you are going on so many trials, then I'd suggest finding a style you like online and going to the ONE person you LOVE and they will do what you show them anyway!

I've been on a lot of trials and I tip every time so that's not the problem but I have to respond to something you said. It is possible that it is no one's fault that the trial didn't go well. It's very different seeing a hairstyle in a picture and then seeing it on you, not everyone looks good with every hairstyle. Multiple trials might just mean they're trying to find the hairstyle that looks best on them, not necessarily criticizing the work of the hairdresser.
