When should we begin looking (want to buy for September) and can 1 realestate agent look all over long island, or do we have to use a few for each area????

Re: Questions: Buying A House...
You should look...when you are ready to buy and have money for the DP. You could find something you love on the first time out...or it could take months! As for the real estate agent...usually, one agent can show you a few towns...but, if you are looking in a large area...(north shore, south shore, nassau, suffolk), you should try to find an agent who specializes in that area. Good luck!!

i agree.. as soon as you have the money... houses seem to go quickly, so you should start looking to find what you want...

Re: Questions: Buying A House...
can we start looking now,,,knowing we don't plan to but until September???
I am afraid if we wait to start looking, we will be pressed and 'settle' so we have a house. I want to have plently of time to look until we find 'the one'.

Re: Questions: Buying A House...
We're buidling in FL, but we have been looking at builders for over a year. We arent going to be ready for a few months, but it never hurts to start looking, getting ideas of what you like, getting to know neighborhoods, school districts, what your neighbors are like, etc....
I dont think it hurts to start looking now.

I agree with luvsun27...you should have a good amount of you down payment....which is usually a lot of money.
If you have your DP...YES GO LOOKING. It took us about a year to find the condo we wanted.

Re: Questions: Buying A House...
If you want to be in your house by september , I would set my goal of finding a house by early June because closing can take awhile! But if you start looking with a RE agent I think you have to be prepared and ready to buy.
FI and I started looking in September on our own, just open houses. Then in November we get a RE agent and have been seriously looking but if we find ahouse we are ready to make a offer tomorrow!
I would wait until the end of February to start looking (the market will open up after the holidays, alot of houses are suspended b/c people dont want to show them until after the holidays) Until then I would do research, check out listings on line, decide upon a genearl area, and reseach the area (school district, crime etc) and figure out what you can afford with your bills so you still will have money in the bank.
FI and I also spent some time just driving around areas to get an idea of what areas in our desired location are better than others. (realtor.com and mlsli.com can give you a general location of where a house is)
Good Luck! THe house search is daunting but exciting! Where are you considering?

Re: Questions: Buying A House...
Thans girls. I actually want to move off the island, but FH is not ready to face that option yet.
I love the north shore (grew up there), FH grew up on South shore. but totally open to ideas. He really likes out on the north fork, but don't know.
I guess the feb/march when the weather gets better will be good to begin looking.
