Quick question about interfaith marriage (Catholic)

Do you need a dispensation to get married outside the Catholic church in an interfaith ceremony?

Asking for a friend - thanks!

i am not sure what you mean

however only weddings performed inside an actual church are 'valid' as catholic marriages

you are not married in the eyes of the church unless you are married in the physical church

hope this answers what you were asking!!

If she wants in recognized by the Church, it has to physically inside a catholic church. there are a few exceptions to that, but not many. i would talk to a priest. If the non-catholic is willing to go into the Catholic church, that can easily be done. A dispensation is needed, just soem paperowrk that needs to be filled out and agreed upon. either way, she should meet with a priest.

This is WRONG!
So is what the other poster said....

Sorry but I am Catholic - marrying a Jew and we are not getting married inside the church - we are getting married at our reception hall and yes we filled out all the paperwork and recieved a dispensation from the bishop to marry outside the church and yes our wedding WILL BE RECOGNIZED BY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH!
Your friend has to talk to her priest...fill out the paperwork, go to precana (I highly recommend the interfaith precana that the Catholic church offers) and she will recieve a dispensation. Times have changed - sorry for my tone but I get annoyed that people aren't aware that the Catholic Church has been doing this for many, many years. My priest in his homily is actually saying something about this b/c so many family members think I've thrown my religion out the window and that my wedding won't be recognized by the church. I want the priest to update all these so called Catholics and tell them that my wedding will be recognized by the church.

Regarding that post - the non-Catholic does not have to sign anything saying he/she will raise his/her children Catholic. The Catholic person is the only one who has to sign something and all it says is you will do the best you can to raise your children Catholic. It doesn't say you will and you must...it just says you will try.
