Quitters!

Quitters!

Smoking that is ... what types of things did you do to get through the cravings / nervousness / insaneness?

Did you take anything to help you quit? Did you have a support group (friends, family, professional)?

I quit cold turkey because (a) I wanted to start thinking about TTC and (b) DH's sister had just died from a cancerous tumor

I did the patch and it was pretty easy. (for me anyway). I had my DH's (boyfriend at the time) support so that helped.

I hardly felt any withdrawal symptoms. just a craving here and there but no insanity or shakes/headaches/whatever.

Re: Quitters!

I use a website called Quitnet
The two things I ate alll the tie (but not together) was combo's (the pizza kind) and twizzlers.
I also got the smallest patch available and kept that one on (the higher ones made me sick) so iI got help from them even though it was verrry little. I keep a patch on hand (50+ days later) just in case I ever get an urge that I can't handle. I have decided that its still better for me if I put the patch on then if I were to smoke the cigarette.

Take a breath and remember your craving will only last for a few minutes. I promise, it does get easier.

Re: Quitters!

No problem! Use it each day, it helps!
Read the motivational stories from others who are deep into their quit!
Joina buddy group! I belong to one where all the members are people that quit the same month I did! It's great because you can talk about what you are physically and emptionally going through with other people who are going through the same thing at the same time.

I feel worse today (physically) than I do when I smoke! My whole chest is killing me.

Re: Quitters!

I quit 8 times. Then I finally quit by not going out with my smoking friends that much, which were also my drinking friends at the time lol. I used to have to smoke if I was drinking...and that was a hard habit to break. After about 2 weeks I felt so much better that I didnt want to smoke. I only craved it after eating mcdonalds (greasy food) or a heavy meal....

Last cigarette was last night at 11:15 p.m. I woke up, showered and put a patch on (about 6:50 a.m.)
I'm OK for the most part, I think I'm most afraid of failing

Re: Quitters!

Remember that the first week is HARD!
Each morning when you wake up, make a promise to yourself that you won't smoke TODAY! Don't worry about tomorrow or next week. Take a deep breath and handle each minute and craving as they come.
Being afraid to fail is fine and normal.
FM me if you need support! or an ear, or to be talked off a ledge.

Re: Quitters!

Honestly - Welbutrin was a lifesaver for me. Made quitting so much easier. You don't have to take it for as long as they say either, take for as long as you feel you need it. The best part about using Zyban or Welbutrin is that the nicotine is OUT of your system after 72 hrs. Unlike the patches, inhalers, gum etc (tried them all and none worked for me) they keep you hooked much longer.

Twizzlers were very good when I really needed to satisfy the oral fixation but the best thing I did was cutting down on coffee. First I cut out coffee altogether for the first week or so. Then I started drinking it again but at different times than normal.

No drinking while quitting!! The temptation is just too great... I gave up drinking for about 3 months.

Drink lots and lots of water to help flush the drug out of your system.

DH quit with me so of course that helped alot.
I also joined quitnet and *sometimes* it helped but for the most part listening to all these ex smokers whine about withdrawal symptoms and slipping, etc and constantly talking about smoking just made me want to smoke more so... I'm not a huge fan of the forums there.

Working out (2x per day) helped alot too and helped me not gain *too much weight*. I gained about 4 lbs before I finally started losing.

Thank you everyone! I appreciate your responses. I know it's going to be hard but I know that it is what's best. DH is also quitting (cold turkey though) and I am hoping we can be our support system together.

That's wonderful!! Stay strong and remember that YOU are in control of your life, not nicotine! Each day only gets easier and you'll thank yourself for making the decision to quit a million times!!
