Could you call before and see if they have the date you want available? Who does quotes or doesn't? I would hate to check out so many venues if I'm not interested.
When planning back in 2011, I called dozens of places. I asked for the date and then for 'rough' quotes and emphasized I knew it could vary, etc. etc. Some places were helpful and told me ranges over the phone. A few places would not talk to me over the phone, so I immediately ruled them out. I refused to drive to a place in Suffolk when I live in Queens when I did not even know if it was affordable for our budget. I explained that to places who were hesitant over the phone, and 9 times out of 10 got some type of answer.
I've never called for venue quotes because FH and I knew where we wanted to get married, but I've always gotten quotes for vendors (photo, transport, etc) either on the phone or through email.
I'd say do lots of research online and pick a handful to check out. Most places are willing to work with the price in person.
You can call or email. Emailing was easiest for me anyway because I basically wrote out a form email and sent it to each venue I was interested in. Some will give quotes and some won't and want you to come in.

I made a list of questions (price for months/days of week we were interested in, max #, min#, ceremony fee, etc..) for almost 15 places & FH called around to them.. every place except for one or two gave us prices over the phone
