R U a no frills bride?

Original post by waterspout4

I feel like I'm by myself when I think it's silly to spend money on unnecessary things. For instance.... why do I need to get a bathroom basket? A slipper basket?

My save-the-dates cost $3.81 for 150 guests. That's right, $3.81. We typed them on our computer and then went to Staples to print them on colored paper that matches our wedding colors. Other friends of ours have done fancy ones that had no info. All of our guests are from out-of-town and many have already booked their hotel rooms, because we included that on the STD.

My gown cost $80, brand new!! One girl told me she wouldn't pay less than $1000 for a gown. Why? It's the exact gown I was looking for. I just know how to shop. It's an $80 gown that originally retailed for $850.

Does anyone else feel like they don't need to spend enormous amounts of money to have a great wedding? (It also helps that we are paying for this wedding ourselves.) Don't get me wrong, I am very excited about the wedding!

I'm just wondering if I'm the only one that doesn't get all crazy over spending. Some experts have said that too many spend so much time and energy on the wedding that they forget about the marriage.

Nope, I definitely enjoy the frills!

Me too!

Yes, there is something to be said about finding what you want for less, but I wanted 'frills' and did what I had to in order to get it. Longer engagement, working two jobs, Friday night reception. And no one went into debt for it but no one helped us pay for it. My husband and I paid for the wedding of our dreams completely on our own. We wouldn't change ONE thing about it - it was perfection!

I had a great time finding ways to save money but still put on a great party. It's funny though because I did do some of the things that you might think are silly. The slipper basket only cost me $30 to do so in the grand scheme of things it was nothing, but it was something I got a kick out of that I knew everyone else would too!

I definitely did crazy things like shop at Payless for shoes, although I ended up getting them cheaper at DSW! $9.99 for Kenneth Cole silk bridal shoes!

Hmmmm. I don't think of myself as a no frills bride. I am CHEAP I am not sure when I discovered this though since I will spend money on shoes, handbags, clothes, perfume and other 'essentials' but for a party Ehhh. I just have not been willing to shell out the cash.

FI on the other hand wants to go all out and spend an enormous amount of money on all the 'Frills'. And they say men don't care about the details

me too! but I don't intend to pick out ' the most expensive' I am picking ou things I want b/c it's what I want- not b/c of the price high or low

I am lucky to not have to contribute anything to the actual wedding- but we are paying for the rings and HM - which is going to be a decent chuck on change

I like the frills but I will search high and low to get the best price. i do however, think that i should put a stop to my crazy thinking at times like I cannot tell you how many times i have gone back and forth thinking if I really want a personalized aisle runner is it 'necessary' no do I 'want' it absolutely. In the end, I will likely purchase the darn thing and suck up the $200 or so to have something that i really want. So, I will skip Starbucks a few times a week, big deal!

I am not a no frills bride maybe because I just don't have the patience or creativity but I admire you for being able to do everything so inexpensively. I just dont have the time.

I have to say that I am a 'frills' bride...more so because this is the one and only time I will be a bride....

I think I was more of a no frills bride, but not really a bargain hunter.

I was more of a lazy bride-- I didn't do std's, or menus, or make/buy anything to put cards in.
I didn't make cards for my Bms, I didn't get a cake topper, I didn't wear a garter.

I did spend a little bit of money on favors, b/c it is a thing in my family & they were pretty.
I did have a bathrom basket, but really it was my aunts idea & my mom made it. And the very last minute I decided I needed prgrams & bubbles.

Well honestly I'm not really sure what you are asking. Many of the brides on here are having modest weddings, & just as many are having elaborate weddings.

I'm not really sure what kind of bride I am. I will spend $20 on something I like as easily as I will $200 or $2000. No big deal, I want what I want.... And thats just that.

As for the many experts... Thats great!!! Nine out of ten dentists choose crest. What's the point?

I totally agree with you. I don't get it either! It's no big deal!

I think I'm a little of both. To me, most important was the hall and the photography. We picked a DJ instead of a band, I didn't do STDs and plan on DIYing programs, and other paper goods and maybe even invites.

On the other hand, I spent a whole lot of money on my gown. Did I intend to? No. But when I came out, my mother started bawling, the price tag seemed pretty obsolete to me. I figured I can use it after the wedding for my children's christening outfits, or make the bassinet out of it. Whatever. I plan on buying cheaper accessories and shoes.

The point I'm coming away from with all of this, it's not a matter of what money you are spending, what money you are getting, or what it reflects on you, I'm just taking the joy of all the planning, knowing that I'm going to live the rest of my life with my soul mate. I can't put a price tag on that.

frills are great if you can afford them.
im trying to not go overboard with certain things that are less important to me.

ie a dj instead of a band
fake earrings
discount bridal store

etc.

To mariela2006 and others looking for a gown:

David's Bridal always has sales. A few times per year they have their $99 gown sale. The best way to save money is be lucky. If you find a dress you like sometimes the bridal shop lets you know that the dress was discontinued and you can buy it off the rack as is. Normally the price is cut in half if you buy off the rack. This does not come without consuquences though. If you buy off the rack, you'd normally want to get it cleaned before your wedding. That's normally $100-$200.

Personally, I heard of the Lighthouse Mission on Railroad Avenue in Patchogue. They receive discontinued gowns from a local bridal shop and ask for a $25 donation if you'd like one. You can try them on there and walk away with it the same day. I felt bad giving them $25, especially when it was the exact dress I was looking for. I gave them $80 and spent $100 getting it cleaned. So, I guess I really paid $180 for a $850 gown.

Yet, I did go all out and get the limo bus for our really large bridal party. We all have our things.

Re: R U a no frills bride?

I was a no frills bride because I had to be and I do enjoy being practical with certain things and finding good deals. If I could have all of the frills and extra's I probably would and I think the brides that have all of the frills have very beautiful weddings! I do feel I also had a beautiful wedding and am very proud of myself for some of the deals which I will brag about again:

1. my dress $300
2. my veil $25-I made it
3. my shoes $19
4. my bridesmaid dresses $60
5. my bridesmaid shoes $19
6. Menus-I made, paper from Michaels $50
7. my makeup-I bought from mac and applied myself, I thought it came out great.
8. my flowers, gorgous around $1000
9. DJ $850
10. BM jewelery, necklace, earrings, bracelet $20

* having a gorgous wedding and having the best day ever - Priceless

Some of the things I did without:

Save the dates, programs, buying toasting flutes and cake knife & server (we just used the hall's) bathroom baskets, guestbook-we had a photo sign board, bubbles, tear packs, slipper basket, no garter, no cake topper, grooms cake, no chocolate fountain.

Re: R U a no frills bride?

I would say no

I'm not into shopping around and I don't have cheap taste, so I always tend to pick the more expensive things anyway. Basically if I like it and I can afford it, I get it.

Re: R U a no frills bride?

I dont think the comments about 'forgetting about the marriage' while planning a wedding is the case....many of us dream of this elaborate wedding since we were little girls and we want all of our dreams to come true, Why cant we have it IF we want it? Why is it so wrong to want to add the small touches??? If you dont want to worry about little detials than dont, and if you want to shop at a discount gown shop or a designer gown shop go for it! BUT wanting a frilly wedding DOES NOT by any means imply that you arent thinking about the marriage part , the obviously MOST important part!

So, no I am not a no frills bride...IF i find a great deal will I go for it??? YES of course, but if I want something bad enough why shouldnt i have it??? It is the ONE day that is centered around my happiness and my fiances happiness and there is NOTHING wrong with having what we want!
