Rabbi Question for Interfaith Brides

Rabbi Question for Interfaith Brides

We are going to meet with a Rabbi tonight for the first time to see if we will book him. I am upset that my own Rabbi will not perform the ceremony, but that is here nor there at this point. My questions to all of you are these: 1. What kind of questions did you ask the Rabbi to make sure he/she was the right one? 2. What made you make your choice? This Rabbi was very willing to do it when I spoke with him over the phone. I asked him if we needed to bring anything with us and he said just a deposit. I told him that I wasn't sure if we would make our decision tonight. I wanted to speak to him first. This is such an akward situation. We know the Priest that is marrying us so it wasn't that strange. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. Also, has anyone seen Rabbi Lowenheim perform and what are your thoughts?

Re: Rabbi Question for Interfaith Brides

Hi:
I don't know if I am the right person to answer this b/c we needed a rabbi who would perform a basic ceremony on shabbat And neither DH nor I are religious.

So when we went to see rabbis, we asked them what would the service be like, what language they will do it in, do they sing, how long will the ceremony last, can we write our own vows if we want to, etc.

We also had pretty simple requirements (i.e. short ceremony, primarily in English, with hebrew blessings and their explanation). So once we found one that worked for us, we booked him, but we didn't have to leave any deposits.

We just paid him cash the day of the wedding.

we are having an interfiath wedding. i am meeting with the rabbi in 2 weeks. we plan on tellling what we want out of the ceremony and what he needs out of us for the ceremony- the 7 blessings, ketubahs, wine, glass breaking, rings. thats it. im sure he will take charge of what needs to be said. if it dosent work out then FM and i will give you the info on the rabbi and deacon we are using

We are having an interfaith ceremony as well. We actually had a VERY awkward time 'interviewing' rabbis - it seems they all assumed we were booking them and we actually had 2 rabbis at once who both thought they were doing our wedding! Kind of funny, but it was VERY awkward. If I were you, I would make it very clear that you are meeting with several people and have to think about your decision. Also, to be honest, we were very turned off by one particular rabbi who kept asking us for the deposit. It was very important to us that the rabbi make an effort to get to know us. Those are the sorts of things I would focus on.

I would suggest going there confident in how you want your ceremony approached. Meaning, know what things you want in your ceremony, and what you want left out. Ask him if, when, and how he will be discussing your ceremony with the priest or deacon you have selected to co-efficiate.

Good luck!

Re: Rabbi Question for Interfaith Brides

Thanks for all of your input ladies. At this point, I am not sure how I want my ceremony to go. I have an idea. It was a bit strange talking to the Rabbi even on the phone and him 'assuming' that he would perform the ceremony. Well, I will let you know how it goes. I am just nervous about going to him.
