Ranch Homes V. Colonials

Original post by MrsTC

What is your preference?

I personally think I would like a Colonial - feels more spacious to me and I like having an upstairs....but I also like the ranch style...and no stairs to lug anything.

What is your opinion?

We have a hi ranch and I hate the layout. I would LOVE to have a colonial, similar to what I grew up in!

I don't think I can choose! I love both styles!

When we were first looking at homes, we didn't limit our choices to a particular style. We felt the market was too tight to have done that.

We ended up finding a colonial (although it's not tremendous and not a true CH colonial either), but I still like it. The layout works nicely for the way we use the house (DH works from a home office, and it is nice to have the office upstairs and away from Paul's playroom/den). I also like that the entire first floor is basically entertaining space. But, it does stink to have lug stuff up and down the stairs (including the baby! Overall, the style has pros and cons.

I grew up in a sprawling ranch and as I kid, I really loved my home. We had a lot of living space and the bedrooms were HUGE. We also had a tremendous basement - one thing I definitely miss with our current home.

i love the extra space of a second floor verses 1 floor... i also cant stand slanted ceilings on a cape... i think id prefer a ranch over it...i

I am partial to colonials or splits....i grew up in a split level.

I like long ranches like my inlaws but I just prefer to have bedrooms on a separate level...

I like colonials better. The house feels/looks bigger. I live in a split-level house now and I always have to make sure my bed is made, everything is clean, etc, just incase I get 'surprised' guests coming over. If I had an upstairs, guests wouldn't necessary need to go up there.

I grew up in a ranch, but I always wanted a two floor house, so that is what we built.

I have a 3 floor ranch...you walk into the living room, dining room, kitchen area. From the main floor you walk up about 10 steps and there's 3 bedrooms and a bath or walk down about 5 steps to a full family room, laundry room and full bath.

It's a called a front to back split ranch. I love it b/c you have the separate levels and your living room/dining room area has very high ceilings and its completely open.
