I personally think I would like a Colonial - feels more spacious to me and I like having an upstairs....but I also like the ranch style...and no stairs to lug anything.
What is your opinion?

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
I am biased because we have a colonial but I have always loved them. I guess since I always grew up with the bedrooms upstairs I would feel weird in a ranch, but they can be very spacious.

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
I would LOVE a colonial hands down, but LI doesn't seem to have too many depending on the town....and those that are colonials are higher in price.
But if I could choose, I'd definitely go with a colonial!

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
There are alot of colonials that we saw but the prices were alot higher, even if the house neede alot of work! So we just bought a ranch! But we also got a full basement so that will add to it! Our thought is that this will be our starter house and in 5-7 years we will get a 2 story!

We have a split level, but plan to sell and get a colonial or victorian in a few years.

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
I always wanted a colonial, but they are way out of our budget....so we just bought a front to back split ranch - so it has 3 levels and very high ceilings in the living room and dining room.
It's very spacious and has an upstairs!!

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
We looked at a few colonials and I was in LOVE with one but it needed so much work...i guess bc many colonials are at least 60+ years old.
I think we may go with a ranch to start with and hopefully be able to buy a colonial.

I initially wanted a colonial, but now that I live in a ranch, I actually like it. I'd love to have a sprawling farm ranch!

We are just going to contract on land in PA and are looking to build a colonial... I love them.
FYI: When building, a ranch has a longer foundation to pour so that aspect costs more.

I like having stairs in my house. Ranches aren't my style. When I was looking I really liked split levels which are common in my neighborhood but then I found my house and it was a colonial and I love it.

I prefer bedrooms upstairs. I lived in an apt all my life and it was always so noisy with people in the kitchen or living room or whatever.

We have a ranch and it has plenty of room for the two of us but lately I have been thinking about putting a top on it. A few of our neighbors have recently done this and it looks great.

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
We very recently focused our search on Colonials (my fav.), but it's hard....There aren't a lot out there and those that are are pricey...
I am not saying I won't settle for anything BUT, however, right now....I am looking for a colonial...
It seems that NJ is just over-run with Split-levels (which is still a great home...just not my fav./taste) and we almost bought one - but retracted our bid.
Ideally, I would love a colonial, but might end up with a ranch or expanded cape.... We'll see....

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
I grew up in a ranch. My parents bought the house as a one level. They built back, and expanded the kitchen and built a back den. They also built two extra bedrooms onto the back of the house.
In the early 70's my parents built a top floor onto my house, which consisted of one bedroom, a living room, a play room, two huge closets, one being a walk through...and the attic.
Now that top floor is where I live. The bedroom was converted into my computer room and full bathroom.
The playroom is my bedroom, and storage room, and the living room is still the same.
Since I will be moving out in a few months, the house will be up for sale...So if anyone is looking to live in a ranch, with 12 rooms total...in a very nice area, let me know.
It has 3 full bathrooms total. A full second floor with closets, and attic.
1st floor consists of 4 bedrooms, 2 full updated baths, living room, eat in kitchen, with newer appliances, den with built in the wall book cases, 1 walk in closet, and many other closets. It also has a foyer. It has a 1 car garage, a double driveway, and a nice size backyard. The school District is 24(lynbrook)
The house has a new garage door, Brand New Windows, New Front Door, Tiled Halls, Mirrors in the dining room, and plenty of room.
In the future, I would like to live in a colonial or maybe even a Victorian. That is if I can afford one. I always dreamed of living in a Gothic Victorian...So I guess I will have to see what happens. Scott

Re: Ranch Homes V. Colonials
I would LOVE a Victorian, but those are a ton of work and very expensive to repair and update.
We have a Farm Ranch right now- but I wouldn't call it sprawling
I miss having a basement though. Upstairs we have 1/4 of the attic finished as an office, the rest we use for storage right now. Scott dreams of adding an entire 2nd floor with 3 bedrooms, a bath and some storage area. But since we did not win Mega Lotto and he does not have a hit record coming out anytime soon that will most likely turn out to be we finish off the remaining attic area into a den and nicer storage area.
In this area and with these prices it is all about what is most important to you IMO. I really wanted a nice size eat-in-kitchen, 2 bathrooms and some closets. I also wanted a dinning room. I got a dinning room area, not as formal as I would have liked but that is okay. I knew we couldn't get everything we wanted and I still love my house anyway
