Random last name question

So my FH has 2 last names (hyphenated).

I do plan on taking his last name. Am I suppose to take both? Or is he suppose to drop one? I was telling him how annoying its going to be to have 2 last names that got me wondering. He doesn't want to change his name because he says it will be to much work and I told him welcome to my world..lol

What would you do in this situation?

Random last name question

I've never even thought of that. I wouldn't know what I would do in that case.

Re: Random last name question

This is a tough one.

If he is comfortable changing his name to only one last name then work involved should not be a factor. Also it won't be the difficult, you can advise him what needs to be done (we all know that woman do majority of the research).

Also, if you plan on having children, you need to take into consideration what their last name would be. If FH last name is Smith-Jones and your last name is Jones and the kids would be what ???

I think you both need to have the same last name, not really sure which one. Think of kids and future daughter-inlaws (you will save them this conversation in the future) lol

Good luck

Random last name question

This was a situation for a friend of mine. I think it's a total personal decision, but I know they dropped his mother's last name but kept the father's last name for that whole 'carrying on the legacy' thing. I think he just kept his name hyphenated. Again, I think this is a very personal decision you should discuss with him since it varies widely from person to person.

Random last name question

The only thing I can think of it that its a little harder for a guy to change his name. You have to make sure its all done legally. I read that one guy took his wifes name instead of the other way arouond, and he was arrested for fraud when he tried to get a loan or something for some crazy reason!

Random last name question

From what I have read he will have to go through the courts to get his last name changed. Ironically, FH's two last names are both from his father's family. I guess FH's mom decided to take both last names.

You all are right. This is a personal decision. I was just curious to know if anyone was in this situation or if they were what they would do. Seeing as though both names are from FH's father's family, I will probably just take both.

Random last name question

I am in the same situation! FH's mother hyphenated her name when she married his father and gave her kids the hyphenated name. She and FH's father ended up divorcing and she went back to her maiden name completely. So dad had one name, mom had another and kids have the hyphenated one. So confusing.

FH is planning to drop the first part of his last name (his mothers maiden name) when we get married. I look at it as his last name SHOULD have been only the second part anyway and since his father is deceased its a nice legacy to carry on. Especially since he and his sister are the only two people in the world with their last name and she will eventually get married and probably change her name so then it would only be him (and me!) with this crazy last name if he kept the whole thing!
