Re: Random question....
I would say yes.
I JUST got a kitchen aid as an engagement gift. Its something I will take out when making cookies and doing big jobs.
I will take out the hand mixer for small jobs (brownies, cake mix etc)
Its up to you, but you can use both.

Re: Random question....
We don't have a kitchen aid mixer (no one got it for us, and I wasn't buying it for myself) but I got a hand mixer for $4 at wal-mart a few weeks ago. It worked great for whipping together the cake batter I was making.
DH got me a cuisinart food processor for Christmas that's super fancy and amazing -- and it has the creaming attachments the kitchen aid has so now I don't need that either!
Anyway, my point is that a hand mixer is really cheap. But if you don't bake, having these items isn't going to make you start. If you can only afford one, I say hand mixer for $4 beats kitchen aid mixer for $250.

Re: Random question....
I just took the kitchenaid I registered for off of my registry and put on a hand mixer. 99% of my friends say it's really heavy and unless you leave it on your countertop will hardly ever use it. I bake, but not every day, so I registered for a really nice hand mixer instead.

Re: Random question....
I have both. I use the hand mixer for everyday type use, and the stand mixer for my Christmas baking. If I don't use the stand mixer for the rest of the year, as long as I have it for my holiday baking (an entire weekend worth of baking) it's paid for itself.

Re: Random question....
I have both and I use my hand mixer so much more than the other one. When I am doing serious baking, then I bring out the stand mixer, but it is so big that I don't use it as often as I should.

Re: Random question....
I have a kitchen aid mixer, but I did put a hand held mixer on my registry. The kitchen aid is very heavy and I plan to use that more around the holidays when I am going to be doing a lot of baking. I think the hand held mixer is more convenient for day to day.

Re: Random question....
I would rather just have a second bowl and attachments for my Kitchenaid since it's on my counter. It does get a little annoying washing out a bowl to mix something else but I couldn't imagine pulling out a hand mixer...
