Random question about figure skating attire...

I've always wanted to know why the women have to wear outfits that have that ugly panthose / sheer looking stuff in certain areas. Are they only allowed to show a certain amount of skin or something? Why can't they wear something with a v back without that ugly netting?

I don't know if I'd want to do something that athletic without boob support, so something with a low back would be hard to pull off. Maybe the netting is there to cover up whatever it is they're wearing under the leotard?

I always assumed it was to keep the outfit in place so it didn't slip all over. I don't think I could concentrate on skating if I thought my boob might pop out.

Come to think of it -- it really could improve one's score, depending on the judges...

I used to compete in ballroom dancing, and we wore similar stockings, and dresses that show a lot - it's a matter of not having the dresses ride up and show too much skin, it holds you in a bit, makes you more streamlined - no friction between legs... it's just part of what you wear - i used to think they were ugly at 1st, because they didn't always match with my dresses, but after a while, it just becomes a part of your gear...

I skated for years and recently took it up again. Bought new skates but I don't wear the outfits. The netting or sheer component is to keep everything from slipping. You don't want to worry about anything moving while you are.

The outfits have come a long way though. Most of the skaters today are much more muscular than years ago and the outfits had to change.

I still think that most of the outfits are just butt ugly but soome skaters are enlisting top designers to help.
