Random question for DIY'ers

I am attempting my first DIY project. A card box for our engagement party. I plan to cover the card box with our engagement photos. So anyway my question is....I took a 'creative crafts' class in high school and I remembered we painted some type of glaze or glue over photos when we made memory boxes and I think this product would be perfect for my card box but I cant for the life of me remember what exactly it was called......Any one have any idea what I am talking about?? All I know is that it some kind of clear glaze or glue that you paint over things to give it a surface a shiny / polished look lol.
