Is anyone planning on or did anyone bring lots of technology with them on their HM?
FH and I were discussing it on the phone at work today. We both have blackberries and ipods. He wants to bring his laptop with us so we can look stuff up, he can watch movies on the plane (he hates watching 'plane movies' - don't ask), we can see if anyone has emailed us wedding pictures, etc. I have asked for a kindle for my bday so I don't have to lug dozens of books with me on our super-long HM. Then there's his camera, my camera, the video camera, the GPS, the list goes on and on.
Is it strange that we're so addicted to technology that we have to bring it all with us. My co-workers laughed when I related the story and said when are you going to find the time to _____ (you know)

my fh wants to bring his labtop and I know we are bringing our cameras and he might bring video camera and we have cell phones and i-pods
I think it's normal - unfortunately we have become so dependent on our technology. Just try your best to not let it distract you from the important stuff

Well if we go to Key West for the minimoon, we'll have our cells and FH will have his camera. For Greece, we'll only have the camera. Neither of us have laptops, iPods, Blackberries, anything. We're truly archaic haha. Or cheap

I really wish we could go back to the days BEFORE we had all this crep. It's crazy. I think I'm going to have more adapters and cords with me on the HM than lingerie!

Re: random technology question.....
I am bringing my lap top so we can look up stuff and because I am in the midst of job hunting and I want to be watching for teaching postings. But NO FACEBOOK and sorry girls, no LIW. It can all wait until we get home.

Don't worry girls .... I'll probably sneak on LIW during the HM FH is planning on golfing at least 3 days and even though those are usually my spa days, I'll have some downtime where I can jump on and say hi real quick.....

When we're away we like to cut ourselves off from the world. We'll have our cell phones. I'll prob have my work blackberry for internet. But that's it. Everything else can wait.

No...i think the only tech I am bring is our phones, cameras and thats it... hotels usually have computers that you can check your emails so I am leaving that home...the less the better for me

Re: random technology question.....
FH an I both have Blackberry's but we are going to keep them turned off becauase the International Plan is a lot of money. I think I may bring my laptop just to have access to the internet if need be. My resort allows calls to be made from our room to the US for free so I am just going to check in with my family that way. I would rather not be bothered by anyone or anything while we are away.

Re: random technology question.....
This is what we are bringing to Rome and the cruise:
Keep in mind someof it WONT work because we will be out of the country.
1. 'Baby' netbook laptop- This is a small laptop with no CD drive. I got it for FH for Chanukkah. We will be able to downlaod all our pictures and video to it to free up space on the camcorde and Digital camera.
2. Ipod touch- Load movies, TV shows, music etc on it.
3. His I-phone
4. New Camcorder- We are researching right now but willbe buying a new camcorder that only uses a SD card. The camcorder is super small and will fit into a tiny backpack.
5. My small Sony digital camera and 2 cards. One 2gig, one 4 gig. Also 2 battery's.
6. Power converter kit.
We are NOT bringing: 1. My blackberry. Won work in Europe. 2. My cellphone. Wont work in europe. 3. Portable DVD player - between the ipod touch and laptop we dont need it.
Hope this helps.
****I cant stress how important it is to empty the pix onto a laptop every night. If your camera gets stolen, there goes all your pix forever. My camera got stolen at a cousins wedding last year and I lost all the pix on it from the weekend.******

Re: random technology question.....
we have a great video camera (the sony HD one) that works on a memory card - its really great and small.
FHs camera is one of those big Nikon D200 with all the lenses and stuff. I have my little coolpix which is like the size of a credit card. The laptop we're taking for the reasons of downloading pictures and watching movies.

Re: random technology question.....
We tend to be picture crazy when on vacation and even though the camera holds over 1000 pictures, we always bring a laptop so we can upload the pictures onto it and then back them up, just in case something happens to the camera.

Re: random technology question.....
I got married last summer and we brought a TON of technology on our HM for the same reason. A few warnings tho:
1. Depending on where you are going the voltage may be different so you may need to bring a converter (the big thing with fuses in it). Look at the back of your plugs/electrical items and check what voltage they can handle.
2. The actual plugs themselves may be a different shape so you will need an adapter so that you can actually plug your things into the wall.
3. TAKE ALL YOUR ELECTRONICS AS CARRY ONS AND KEEP A CLOSE EYE ON THEM AT ALL TIMES! If you have a safe in your room USE IT! Don't leave anything out for people to be tempted by!
4. Keep the blackberries off unless YOU need to contact someone or want to check in once a day. We are always so in touch with everyone - your HM is a time for you to be solely concentrated on each other. We brought ours but only checked in once a day on emails and what not and it was really nice to not have to compete with the blackberry for my husbands attention :)
5. Where ever you go, don't forget that you are there for a reason: you want to see the sites, do something adventurous, relax etc...all your miscellaneous technology can be a distraction from that. Make sure that you limit your tech use so that you can actually enjoy the destination :) you can always futz around on your computer/watch a movie/write emails/update your FB page etc when you get back.
Ok that's what I learned when I went on my HM and brought a ton of technology with me. We were gone for 2 and half weeks too so it was not a short HM by any means...we needed to bring it all. But it was excellent to have it limited and enjoy the time we had in St Lucia.
:)
Hope that helps!

Re: random technology question.....
Great advice about the adapters.
I'm leaving the Blackberries home-yes I have 2 they won't work anyway because I don't have the international one so why bother?
We are bringing the mini notebook we have so we can surf when we want to and of course post on LIW
And of course the digicam, I'm going to buy 2 new memory sticks.
Are the adapters in Greece different than Italy's? Anyone?

Re: random technology question.....
I believe Italy and Greece have the same adapters - it's two big round plugs.
FH and I aren't leaving our BBs on all the time. We will be checking them once or twice a day. Also due to the time difference (Hawaii is 6 hours behind NY), if we check them at some point before dinner we'll be fine.
I've already told my office that they are NOT to contact me (which they have a habit of doing while I'm on vacation). I will not be responding to ANY work emails, phone calls, etc.
