OK, so the RD invites are obviously less formal.. if a couple is not living together but invited together can I address them both to the one address although one of them doesnt live there so they know both are invited? There is not inner envelope to signify this...

You can do that, you can put both names on the outer envelope and send it to one address.
Before FH and I lived together, he'd get invites addressed to both of us at his parents house all the time.

You can do that. RD invites aren't as formal. Me and FH received invites like that b/4 we lived together
