Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
I am not a fan of buffets but that is because I went to a party that was buffet and they ran out of food by the time I got up there and never restocked! Now I am paranoid whenever there is a buffet that I won't get fed LOL!

Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
I would never say a buffet dinner is trashy. Especially if you're doing a casual backyard reception; it seems totally in line with the feel of the event. (not trashy at all).
I'm planning a DW in Scottsdale; I'm finding Buffets are actually more expensive than sit down dinners!
I'm doing a buffet b/c the resorts I have been in touch with charge too much for a tableside entree selection; and because I'm doing a destination wedding; i really don't want to have to send out entree selections with my invitations. Now my guests can just eat whatever and however much they want
Best of luck!

I personally think buffet is trashy.... sit down all the way!
Dear wedding newbie, We all understand what it is like to be new here on the boards, so just a word of advice. Please keep in mind who will be reading your posts. Obviously it is your personal opinion in regards to buffets--and you are entitled to it--but think of the brides who have chosen buffet style for their wedding...you may have offended/insulted them, ya know? I am just saying please post with respect for all the brides who will be reading it. Certainly express your opinions, but with tact and respect for others at the same time. Thanks. Cari

Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
First of all- I am usually one who stays out of drama here but I need to put my 2 cents in. I am having a buffet for my wedding and I dont think it will be trashy. My buffet will be 3 hrs long with non stop food. This way people can eat what they want, when they want and how much they want and are not limited to picking just 1 item. And everyone I have told that we are having buffets all said that they love buffets. There are ways of saying things without being mean about it! Think before you post an answer that might insult people!
Back to the original question. You can do whatever you and FH are most comfortable with. i would go for the buffet!

I must be the queen of trashy cuz I'm having my RD in my backyard...a BBQ
To answer the OP's question-
It really depends on your personal taste and style, and also your budget. I think either one is perfectly acceptable. I LOVE buffets cuz its all you can eat, and if you dont like something you can get something else.
There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG with buffet parties. In fact, I think a lot of people enjoy them more than a sit down at times.

Either is fine!
There's no real faux pas in either of them.

I've been to both and I think it depends on the price. Buffets are cheaper I believe but not sure.

Actually, this is a common misconception. Buffets generally are not more than a few dollars less per person, if at all.

For my DW in Scottsale all the RH quoted HIGHER prices if I went with a Buffet since It would require more food than if i did a sit down dinner.

Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
There is nothing wrong with a buffet dinner. I've only ever been to one wedding where there was a buffet/passed entree reception and I thought it was nice. The only neg. thing I had to say about it was that I didn't get offered every choice of entree that was beeing passed. I had to chase someone around for something I wanted.

If you are looking to spend as less as possible, then go with the sit-down since it consist of 3-4 courses. However, buffet requires refills for stations which means since more trays have to be refilled (depending on size of your wedding) this can add up to a pretty good sum. This advice came from the caterer I worked with for my wedding. In the end, I went with sit down dinner since it cost a lot less than buffet.
We found this too when looking into it...buffet isn't necessarily less expensive - it's a lot more food!

Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
Either is fine - like someone else said, a sit-down has a bit of a formal feel to it, whereas a buffet allows people to feel a little more relaxed and mingle.
We looked into a buffet for our wedding, actually, but decided on a sit-down. Our RD is going to be a buffet, and I'm glad that the newbie isn't invited, because lord knows how humiliated she'd be to have to :gasp!: eat from a buffet. Horror of horrors!
Ain't no party like a trailer park party 'cause a trailer park party don't stop!

Re: RD- buffet or sit down?
trashy - really? lol wow
okay well I love buffetts. I get to eat whatever I want. if I only want to eat the chicken I can take a plate full of chicken.
I'm not even doing a rehearsal dinner, and if I decide to I will have to keep the cost SO low (think pizza at my house) because I'm way over budget with everything.
