I was wondering if you are required to be catholic in order to be a reader, and if you arent required : would a jewish person feel awkward doing a reading in the church? any input is appreciated. thank you.

Re: readers at a catholic mass
The first reading is from the Old Testament, so that should be fine for anyone.

Re: readers at a catholic mass
I did a reading from the Old Testament at my brother's wedding. His wife is Catholic - they weren't married in the church. Old Testament was fine, but I was a little weirded out by having to say'the word of the Lord' I am simply not used to it.

I don't think there's any church requirement about this. For my sister's wedding they didn't ask AT ALL.
I think a Jewish person would be more comfortable reading the 1st reading (old testament) or the responsorial psalm, but not the 2nd reading (new testament). I would just go over the reading with them because 'the word of the lord' might be something they don't feel comfortable saying and also even though the old testament reading are the same, sometimes the translations are slightly different, and so you don't know if there's anything in there, that may refer to the 'lord' and imply jesus (this si especially for the pslam, not so much for the 1st reading)..
I'm making it more complicated than it is, but you get the idea

I read the reading that talked about Eve coming from Adam's rib. I liked what I read but Marymoon was right - I wasn't comfy with 'the word of the Lord'. Someone else might be fine with it.
