Ready to give up and not even have a wedding... UPDATED!

Original post by AmyElizabeth

UPDATE: We are booking 10/30!

Thank you all for your advice and support. It's been such a stressful few weeks. Now I am looking forward to planning my actual wedding (instead of my wedding date!)

PS - FH called FMIL to tell her, and she started suggesting other RHs. Seriously? She started naming all these other places we should check (all of we we have and are mostly out of our budget). Also, she suggested we look at late next year, even though we told her we'll be priced out of most places because they give you better prices to fill the upcoming dates they haven't booked. Her response to that? Well, by then you'll have saved more money. WHAT?! We don't WANT to spend more money. And let me remind you, they are not giving us a dime.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi girls. I’ve been lurking around for quite a while and wanted to introduce myself! FH and I got engaged in March, after being together more than 6 years, and are currently trying very hard to plan a wedding for 2010. An outdoor CH and maybe outdoor ceremony are very important to us, as well as photos outside with greenery and flowers.
I apologize in advance for how long this is going to be, but if I don’t vent, I am going to explode…
After 2+ months and 25 RHs, we found one that we love, and that is within our budget (we are basically paying for the wedding ourselves). Obviously, only certain dates are available, and since it’s such a short time frame (as opposed to 12-18 months out), we asked family (aunts, uncles and cousins) and close friends if they were free, and it’s been hell ever since.
1. 10/10 (before we picked the current RH) – FH’s Friend B is getting married that day and just told him now! They are having a small “family” thing, but FH’s Friend J is going! (FH is a little hurt Friend B didn't tell him at least)
2. 10/2 – FSIL has a triathlon (she is semi-pro) and would be locked out of the circuit until 2012 if she didn’t race. I want to be a biotch and say too bad, but I can’t. I'm not that mean. Plus, I don’t want drama. (she's a BM). Also, FH’s Friend B can’t come.
3. 11/20 – FH’s Friend J can’t come. Weather will be cold, definitely no greenery.
4. 10/30 – FH’s Friend B can’t come. My Friend S can’t come. Also, we are concerned about the weather and photo ops.
Here is where I found out my dress will be in much earlier than expected.
5. 8/28, 29 – FH’s Friend J can’t come. My aunt and uncle are bringing my freshman cousin to college that weekend.
6. 9/5 – FH’s Friend B can’t come. And I am nervous about Labor Day. I hear 'that's great, it's a 3 day weekend!' and 'no way, people go on vacation that day'...
Many people have said, 'don’t ask us, do what is right for you and we will be there!' Other people tell us 'don’t try to accommodate other people, it’s your wedding'. But what I think is important to clarify is that we’re not doing this to accommodate these people for THEM – we actually want them there and would be sad if they weren’t.
Also, people keep saying, well, why don’t you just plan ahead for late next year so people are free? We have considered that (even though I am sick of waiting and I want to get married sooner rather than later) but what most people don’t realize is that the price will jump big time. The only reason we aren’t priced out of the place we’re looking at now is because we’re booking in a short time frame. The same dates next year would be $20-30 more pp.
I just don’t know what to do anymore. I can’t focus on work. We both can’t sleep well. And we are getting into little fights everyday about this. I am seriously ready to call the whole thing off. I can’t keep doing this. I get my hopes up and we find out someone is busy. I can’t look at any more places. I am so stressed. I’m on WW and gained weight for the first time last week because of all of this.
Again, I’m so sorry for the length – I applaud anyone that’s made it to the end. Thanks for listening girls.
You are always going to have a date that conflicts with someone.
My feeling: do it on a day that Friend B isn't available. He didn't seem to care about inviting your FH to his wedding, and he has so many 'blackout' dates that's bordering on ridiculous.
FH and I didn't ask anyone what worked for them. If you do that your never going to pick a date. If you ask people your giving them the option to say 'I already have somethign else going on, can you do it another weekend?' Just pick a date that you want, trust me, they will all find a way to be there if its important to them. My own mother told me to do what I want, she didn't care what day I picked.
You simply can't please everyone. Pick a day that YOU and FH want not what works best with everyone else's schedules. The people that are most important to you will find a way to be there.
Thank you girls, for all of your support. I really wish we never asked anyone if they were free, but once we started it was impossible to stop. Like dominoes - every time we identified a new date, we found someone who couldn't come!
I think we are going to go with 10/30. FH and I have to discuss it a little more tonight, but it's sounding more and more like that is the day.
Haha, the thing I forgot to mention is that my best friend (and one of of BMs) is getting married 11/7! So that leaves less than a week for a HM. But that's not a big deal - just funny...
Thanks again, you girls are the best.
Hmm.. I would do 10/30. JMO. Honestly, don't give up on the wedding. It's annoying to plan right now but it will be so worth it in the end.
You need to start acting more like a bridezilla!
I'm going to say what you've already heard... you can't, absolutely can't plan your date around other people.
No matter what date you pick I'm sure there is going to be at least 1 person who you'd love to attend who can't. That's life. Esp. since it's 'short' notice.
Imo you shouldn't focus on the friends who can't be there. If your going to ask anyone of their availability it should be your immediate family members.
i noticed that 4 out of the 6 dates you gave, Friend B is not available! not to be mean but how important IS friend B to affect your nuptials THAT much???
If it's causing you THAT much stress, to the point that you can't sleep and you're considering calling it all off... wouldn't it be better to make a concession to yourselves on any one of those things you metnioned?
Personally, I'd do the Labor Day thing. I understand people have things they can't reschedule (marathons, other weddings) but few people have made Labor Day vacay plans already...
People who are important to you and you're importnt to them.. they WILL BE at your wedding. and if they'd rather plan a vacation that weekend instead of the 14 other weekends they could pick over the summer... well, are they really worth working around then? I say no.
PS, it sounds like this 'Friend B' of FH's is a real thorn... he's precluding half the dates you're considering! I know he's important, but more important than having the wddding you want when you want?
I know that you have heard this said before but you really do need to put yourself first... when do YOU want to get married?
i 100% agree with what everyone else has already said.
you can't pick a day that will make everyone happy and only having 1 week for a honeymoon is a huge NO NO for me!
i would do the wedding in september or ausgust if i could so i could still get the scenery i wanted and not wait so long to finally be mr & mrs.
I agree with everyone as well. It's your wedding and you should do what is easier for you, not for everyone else.
Honestly, this is YOUR day so you should do what makes you happy. I'm stressing myself because I cannot seem to find a reception hall that we can afford (we are pretty much paying for the whole thing) and that we like. I am curious as to where you ended up, we sound like we have similar taste.
But to get back to what you had originally said, this is possibly one of the few times where you can truly be selfish, so you must do what makes you happy. It may hurt hearing what some people have to say, but in the end it is all about your journey with your FH.
Lots of luck!!
DON'T plan your wedding to accomodate friends. Do it because you're in love and want to take the next step. Also, I got married 10/31/09 and the weather was AMAZING! Don't give up
Yay for picking a date!!!!
People always say 'It's your day. Do what YOU want.' and then they always have to put their two cents in. Remember: It really is YOUR day so do what YOU want. Let the all the other comments/criticisms/opinions slide right off....
Congrats on picking a date! Someone will always have something to say about what you're doing but just ignore them and do what makes you and FH happy!
10/30 is my date and I guess I am biased but we chose use because its the day before Halloween so everyone is in a partying mood and its fall so they weather is usually crisp but not freezing.
Which hall did you guys decide on?
