Real. I only have two though - I spent about $40/$50 on necklaces for each - something different for each of them to fit each of their personalities and styles.
Costume just never looks quite right to me.
Besides - it's not like you have to buy diamonds or rubies. There are plenty of beautiful real semi-precious and even precious stones that look gorgeous and can more easily fit within a budget.

The only jewelry I got my BMs as part of their gift is a circle of life encklace and its real...got them from overstock.com for $50 each.
