REALLY annoyed....need advice! A little long....sorry
Okay so I work in the Admissions dept in a high school and this is my first year. I stayed late tonite to help out with an event that was going on. I was speaking to someone else that has been there a few years about company policies. The first issue: I was told that I only get a half hour lunch (I work 9-5). I was like fine - I barely take lunch anyway but it would nice to have the option once in a while Well I found out tonite that everyone else gets an hour lunch. The second issue: It's a Jewish school so we get off A LOT of holidays. I took a huge pay-cut for this job and my boss knew that....one of the things she sold me on was the holidays we have off. Well all of a sudden I have to work one of the breaks...an extra 5 days that I thought I had off. I heard it was because I was a 'new-hire'. I could understand having a half hour lunch and having to work the break (being that Im new) if everyone had to go through this but according to this girl she never had to and has always had a full hour lunch and all of the breaks. I just feel like I am getting taken advantage of.and I have always gone the extra mile from the beginning. What do you girls think?? Should I say something?? Sorry so long..TIA!!

I would say something but no sure how you would say it. You dont want to come off complaining or get anyone in trouble but whats good for others should be good for you. I would say something!

By law, they are only required to give you a half an hour for lunch - it s u c k s but that's the reality. However, I then assume that you are not a salaried employee. Your paycheck should then be based upon a 37.5 hour work week and you should be getting paid at least straight time for the hours worked between 37.5 hours and 40 hours. After 40 hours, it goes to time and a half. If you are a salaried employee, I don't think they area allowed to be that strict with lunch hours, since you are not being paid by the hour.
As far as working during a school break - will you be the only person working that week? If so, I would definitely say something. If not, I'm afraid it may be part of the new hire 'hazing'
However, I would come right out and ask my boss. You don't have to do it in a complaining way - just ask for the facts.
