Really Personal Issue - Advice Needed - Sorry It´s Long

Original post by WeddingGem

Hey, So I´m surprised I´m even posting this b.c not many people know but I am just not sure what to do and would like unbiased opinions. Without getting into TMI I have a cousin who sexually abused me when I was really young. Apparently I blocked everything out because it was ony years later (when I was a teenager) that my parents confirmed this to me. I have no recollection of my early childhood and mentioned this to them a few times and so they told me. (what i didn´t tell them at the time is that I would have dreams with images about the situation but I thought that was just weird dreams) As far as I am told I eventually told my mom (because i never wanted to go there but they always wanted to force me to) and my parents told his parents. Aside from that I don´t anyone in the fam knows.

Years later, I´m basically over it and don´t really hate him or anything. But I still get weird flashbacks sometimes (rarely) and every so often (rarely) I do get depressed or something about it but talk my way out of it quickly. Since that happened I´ve seen him at different family reunions, weddings, etc. Sometimes it doesn´t faze me but sometimes I get an uncomfortable feeling. I´m not rude or anything. I say hello to him and his wife but don´t linger around talking to them. (i never went to her bridal shower or their wedding)

I told my mother that I don´t want him at my wedding. She thinks that it was such a long time ago and he was just a child that I should just get over it and invite him anyway. She said she felt bad for his wife who is so sweet and is going to wonder why she isn´t invited and think that some of the fam might be offended and not come. At first I got really pissed and was like anyone who doesn´t want to come and would rather take his side then I don´t want them there anyway. (Then again most people don´t even know.)

I know that sometimes his being around doesn´t faze me but sometimes it does. I just dont´want to be uncomfortable at my own wedding.

I had told my mom that I obviously wasn´t going to go around telling people why he wasn´t invited but if people started bothering me about why he´s not invited and trying to make me feel bad I would just tell them. I dont´think this is something that he´s talked about with his wife and a lot of the fam doesn´t know. He was young at the time of the incident as well. (he couldn´t have been more than early teens I think) And I´m pretty sure it wasn´t a situation that repeated with other people. And like I said earlier I don´t hate him or anything so wouldn´t really want to be telling people this. What good would that do?

Now I´m thinking of maybe sending her the bridal shower invite and them a wedding invite when they go out but sending him an email or something explaining that for obvious reasons I would prefer he not attend.

This way the reason why I dont´want him there doesn´t have to come out, but I still get to have my wedding be carefree. I put it on him as the one not being able to go.

This all came up b.c my mom and sister are sending out the bridal shower invites iwth the save the dates. My mom called me last night to make sure I was 100% sure we weren´t inviting them to the wedding because then she wouldn´t invite her to the shower even thought she thinks she should be invited. I feel bad for his wife and don´t have anything against her. I don´t think it would bother me having her at my shower.

What do you guys think? Is it best to just outright exclude them and not send them invites (although i just realized people might just think it got lost in the mail!!) or should I send them the invites but let him know I dont´want him there?

I am SO SO sorry this happened....

IMO, I would definitely not invite him...it is your wedding and your day and you should be surrounded by people that you want to be surrounded by on your special day, not someone who you everyone else thinks should be there...

Again, so sorry about this and I am here if you need to talk!

I would in no way, shape or form invite him. Its his place to explain to his wife what he did and if poeple bug you for a reason just say you have your reasons and don't want to talk about it.

i wouldnt invite him, let him deal with his wife and everyone else prying questions, if him coming makes you feel uncomfortable on your wedding day then IMO he should not be there

i understand your moms point but this is a big issue, maybe if he had deeply apologized now that he's an adult it would have been a little different, but he hasnt, and its awkward, and its like this huge skeleton in the closet that you will be reminded of on your day if you invite him and he comes

Your mom should not be telling you to get over it! You need to do what you feel comfortable with, it is your day. How will anyone even know if he wasn't invited or if he couldn't attend? I had cousins who did not come to my wedding. If you need to I would send the invite out to keep the peace and email him and ask that he please not come and keep it between the two of you. I'm sure he will understand.

ITA with what all the other girls are saying!
i agree w/the email idea...he should know not to go and whether he wants to tell his wife or not is his issue... i dont think u should worry abt telling anyone.

I'm so so so sorry this happened to you

I can't believe your mother told you to get over it. If it was tramatic enough to block out, its not something that can be easily gotten over.

I have to agree with some of the other poster and say not to invite him. He's not worth you spending money on the invite or the postage! When he doesn't get an invite, he will know why. Let him figure out what to tell his wife. She ought to know what type of person he is!

I also agree with telling people its a minimum thing. You said that you barely ever see him, so it makes sense not to invite him. Change the subject if people ask. Although that will be uncomfortable, so will worrying about him showing up if you invite him, despite sending him the email not to.

i am sooo sorry to hear this story.

i dont have much advice..but here it is...

can you send an invite..and then have your mom (or someone else that knows) call him and tell him that you would prefer he not attend. but you were being polite and didnt want to cause drama with his wife

i think he should understand that. its up to him to make an excuse to his wife. but at least she will stay ignorant and blissful in that.

I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through this. I would never invite him to my wedding if I were in your shoes. Yeah he was a kid, but doesn't that usually indicate he'll be into something worse down the road? Who knows what he does now! Again, I'm so sorry!

I am so sorry you had to experience this... honestly I say don't invite him. You don't need to explain your reasoning to anyone. It's your wedding day!!! You should be completely comfortable, if being around him might make you uncomfortable on one of the most important days of your life then he should not be there.

Sorry to hear about your experience and glad to hear you have gotten past it and it does not have any effect on you.

I would not extend any type of invitation to him. If him or his wife chooses to ask you why they were not invited, you simply explain your reasons for not wanting him there.

Also, do not go telling anyone the 'real' reason you are not inviting him and his wife, its really not any of their business to ask.

First of all...I am sooo sorry you went thru that. You sound like a very strong person and I commend you for that.
At first I was going to say, dont invite him and if people give you grief about it tell then, 'if you want to know why he isnt invited, let him tell you the reason why'. Then I thought about it and it soundslike it would open a bigger can or worms for you.
So, I think, you should email him and tell him how you feel, that you DO NOT want him there and since it is your special day, you would appreciate it if he makes up somekind of excuse that he cant be there, so when people inquire why he isnt there you can say he had other plans, etc.
Best of luck to you...

Re: Really Personal Issue - Advice Needed - Sorry It´s Long

Bottom Line is go with what YOU want and what your gut is telling you, not all the voices and guilt from everyone else. You shouldn't be worrying about whether the wife is upset over not getting invited, or if your mom disagrees with your choice. If you don't feel comfortable having him there on your wedding day, he shouldn't be there. That's how I feel. It is your special day and something happened between you two that makes it a problem and you have the right to not invite him- with or without reason.

Speaking as someone who had a similar situation when she was younger.....

While you may be mostly over it, there is still likely resentment and fear over this. I know I had it until the person passed away. This is not a situation where its 'feelings will be hurt if they aren't invited' this is a protect yourself.

Honestly, I would be upset if someone had mentioned to me that oh it would cause problems or they would be upset if not invited. It doesn't matter. Seeing the person again could bring up to many bad memories that YOU DON'T WANT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY.

Sorry, but I would 100% say they are not invited, forget thinking of their family, think of yourself.
