the boy (age 12) wants a mountain bike and the girl (age 6) wants 6 bratz dolls, 2 big red and pink balloons and a barbie doll house.
don't they screen these letters prior to sending? there is no way that i can fulfill their x-mas wishes. how in the world would i even mail a mountain bike?

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
That is awful. Your heart is in the right place trying to fulfill this child's wish, and goodness knows the child is allowed to make wishes but you are right this should be screened. The only thing I can think of is maybe taking up a collection and work and seeing if the office might want to 'adopt' these kids for Christmas.
Good luck.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
It says on the letter that comes with the letter from the kids not to worry about filling the child's exact wish - for many kids it's the only gift they will get, and they will be happy to get a gift, period. I'm sure they will love whatever you get them! For the girl, just get her one Bratz doll or something. For the boy, you'll have to get him something different.
As far as screening the letters, I think the social workers who work with these kids should tell them to write a few possibilities. Some people who get these letters may actually have the money to provide these gifts, and that's great, but obviously most of us can't.
I saw the social workers at the agency I extern at telling the kids to write their letters to santa. These kids have such a tough life, and it's nice for them to be able to dream about what the would ideally want.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
thanks! it just breaks my heart that this little boy is dreaming about a bike for x-mas and will be disappointed when he doesn't get it. not to mention, the gifts need to be sent ups.
i am searching amazon now and they do have bikes under $50. i am wondering if i go to target or kids-r-us and show them the letter if they will give me some kind of discount.
the poor boy writes 'i would like a mountain bike so that i could ride w/ my friends to the park.'
how incredibly sad is that?
do you think a scooter would suffice?

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
I got a letter from a 10 year old boy who asked for an x box a playstation 2 and a remote control hummer.
The other letter was a 17 yr old girl asking for a gf to Old navy or Gap. I am taking up a collection from my family.

isn't a scooter a little juvinelle for a 12 year old though? do you think that other kids will make fun of him?

hmmm...i don't know if it's too old for a 12 year old. I know scooters are popular, but i'm not sure exactly what the age limit is.

that is ridiculous. why don't these people at the center explain to the children that santa has a lot of chidren to make toys for and that he only has one night to deliever all the packgaes to the children. maybe then, they would not ask for so much.
again, my heart goes out to these kids and i want to do the right thing, but at the same time.....

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
I got mine too, I was so nervous it would be something I couldn't fulfill but my 6 yo boy simply asked for a Hulk and a Spiderman.
I can do that, plus I think I will add some other Hulk and Spiderman related items to his box
Regarding the bike, if you do find one that fits your budget, I think it said that you can have it direct shipped from where ever you buy it, just be sure it has the childs name on it.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
Oh, boy. FH and I did this last year - we each took a letter.
Well, both kids to whom we sent the gifts last year sent another letter back this year... to his work address because that's where the package was mailed from! And, ONE WANTS A GAME BOY! He's FOUR. His mother wrote it for him and actually printed it out on a computer. We had 2 in the envelope - she probably sends 50 out, hoping she'll get a ton back. She actually also asked for 'an electronic Meriam-Webster dictionary' for herself. Hello???
We're just doing the one FH got back (it's a brother and sister). They asked for clothes (in addition to Game Cube, of course) so they probably need it a lot more than the one I sent it to last year.
Kind of gives you a bad perspective on this stuff, which sucks because we were so excited to do this last year and make it a yearly tradition. We're of course going to continue but not without a bit of skepticism

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
wow- I was thinking of doignthis for next year. It is good to be prepared. Kids just want to be like their friends.
the bike might be doable if you can get people to chip in & can have a store/website ship it directly.
I think I'd really want a kid to have that if I could manage it. It is more usable & healthier than a x-box.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
Wow!!! I can't believe what some of those kids are asking for!!!!
Mine is a 7 year old and he asked for Lego 1000 piece creator set and a Sit N' Spin (isn't that babyish for a 7 year old?).
That stuff only comes to $25 so I'm going to buy something else too!

Questions.... So are you saying once they have your address you will automatically get letters every year? Don't they have to go through the program? Or your kids (or parents) were just bold enough to save your address for an entire year. And I thought it was supposed to be from 'Santa'? Don't they take the gift out of the shipping box or wrapping? I'm so confused.
