the boy (age 12) wants a mountain bike and the girl (age 6) wants 6 bratz dolls, 2 big red and pink balloons and a barbie doll house.
don't they screen these letters prior to sending? there is no way that i can fulfill their x-mas wishes. how in the world would i even mail a mountain bike?

Wow!!! I can't believe what some of those kids are asking for!!!!
Mine is a 7 year old and he asked for Lego 1000 piece creator set and a Sit N' Spin (isn't that babyish for a 7 year old?).
That stuff only comes to $25 so I'm going to buy something else too!
The sit n spin might be but not the legos. My son 7, loves legos and bionicles or what would be cool for you is 7.99 made by Lego are those knights my son likes them too

Yeah I think so but hey remember your Santas helper. Your getting off cheap compared to some of the others here. I still havent gotten my letters so I called and I got results of four kids. 2 girls and 2 boys shrek operation game, cd player, ez bake oven, yuigoh duel desk set, some yuigoh cards, and some games. The only one which is going to be hard is the cd player cause my son doesnt even have one

It seems a little young for a 7 year old but if he wants it!! Maybe he asked for it for a little brother or friend?

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters - UPDATE
i called the center today and told that that i was EXTREMELY disappointed and asked if they screened the letters. her answer was a flat-out simple, 'NO.' i went on to tell her that i would like to fulfull their x-mas wishes, but they seem very extravagent.
after we discuseed further, she mentioned that i could buy a gift card to kmart., toys-r-us or target and let him pick out a bike (save on shipping). i think i am going to go tomorrow and check out the prices.
as mentioned, my heart goes out to these kids, but the center should be more watchful.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
Posted by Kate Questions.... So are you saying once they have your address you will automatically get letters every year? Don't they have to go through the program? Or your kids (or parents) were just bold enough to save your address for an entire year. And I thought it was supposed to be from 'Santa'? Don't they take the gift out of the shipping box or wrapping? I'm so confused.
No, not all do this I'm sure, although it's odd that both of the families FH and I had last year did this. The parents kept the address for the year! You send the gift to the child directly and FH forgot to put the post office's address as the return address. But, we never dreamed it would mean anything as far as them writing back to us! They were both addressed to 'Santa Claus, 600 Oakland Avenue' (FH's work address).
We may have gotten 2 bad deals on this, it just sucks that people like the mother of the four year old can turn around and turn a good deed into something crappy.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
i hate to sound negative, but i am afraid that if i DO decide on giving a gift card (which would be about $100) that there is a possiblility that it won't be used for the intended purpose (bike). i think i am better off getting a gc to toys-r-us rather then target or kmart. i feel bad thinking this way, but one never knows.

I think you are ABSOLUTLEY right! If you're going to get the GC, get it for Toys R Us.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
I just wanted to say that I agree the letters should be screened. My 11 year old boy asked for Grand Theft Auto for his playstation 2! Its not an extravegant gift, but it is completely inappropriate! I am going to try to get him another, more appropriate game that is new, to make sure he doesnt have it already.

Re: Received my NY Cares, Secret Santa letters
Wow! I cant believe all of these wishes. My 8 year old girl asked for an easy bake oven and I was able to find it in Walmart for under $20. If I do this again next year, I'm going to hope that the letters will be screened. I dont know how I would be able to send a child a bike, even x-box's can be $$$$.

If you're willing to spend that much, you might be able to get a bike at walmart.com for less than that including shipping. Like this bike would come to about $80 including shipping.
