I don't think I want to do one.....is it expected?

Re: Receiving line
It is very much so expected. To be 100% honest with you, I find it offensive when couples do not do it.

Agreed. I wasn't going to do one at first because it was going to be SO hot, but then I realized that these people were coming all the way out to be at our wedding, I could give them a few minutes of my time.
I also had a lot of people at the ceremony that weren't going to be at the reception so I felt it was the right thing to do.

Re: Receiving line
we didn't do one and i've only been to a few weddings that have honestly.
One thing a friend of mine did was ask that after the ceremony, you stayed in your seats, and she & her husband came over and greeted you in the pew. I had never seen that before - so i liked that a lot.
If you are going to mingle during your cocktail hour - then the line is not necessary in my opinion.

Re: Receiving line
We didn't have one we went around and thanked everyone at our ch and reception. I realize most people do it because they have a church wedding but honestly i find it so ANNOYING to wait in line to say hello and congrats. I rather catch up with you later on in the evening.
I have to say if you think it will only take 10 mins then go for it (really that is not so bad) wedding i have gone to have taken WAY more then that. Some guests think its there time to have a small convo instead of a hello and congrats thing.

Honestly I don't quite agree, although we were mingling during our cocktail hour we were all over the place and there were many people we didn't even get to see!
We did do the receiving line, but just with my parents and DH's parents (not the whole BP) which makes it faster--I think it's also nice for my family/friends to meet DH's parents, his to meet mine (for those who hadn't), and everyone wants to say a quick congrats

Re: Receiving line
we did one, just DH and I, right after the ceremony at the RH, as people went into CH. It took 10 minutes max... and we were glad we got to say a personal hello to all of our guests... as hard as we tried later on, we still didn't make it to all the tables.

I agree, I did the same. I think it means a lot & it only takes a few minutes.

Re: Receiving line
i didn't want to do it...the whole idea of standing there for people to compliment you and 'oh you look so GOOOOOOOOOORGEOUS' just felt a bit too cold and self absorbed to me...BUT...I'm doing it because my ceremony is over at 2 and reception starts at 5...so for people who have nowhere to go in between it will kill some time before they head to JT

Re: Receiving line
We had talked about greeting guests as they came into the cocktail hour but then that posed the issue of those who will come to church but not to the Reception (and yes people do that).
So we are doing it at church, FH and myself and both sets of parents. We know this will take time but it is the right thing to do.

Re: Receiving line
The last one I observed definitely did not last 10 minutes -- I thought it would never end. 300+ guests in the church and people felt compelled to take individual pics with the bride, groom, members of the bp, the bride's grandpa and any combination of those people. I could see the bride becoming annoyed but what could she do? I wasn't going to have one because of this but maybe I should. Maybe someone at the end of the line can hand out the bubbles so people get the idea to move it along?
