Reception Bar,Is ne one else thinking about doing this?
Is ne one else thinking about doing this?
Instead of a Five hr open bar, FH and I was thinking about serving beer, wine, soda, and a couple of signature drinks.
Since it is going to be in the Fall we were thinking like Hot buttered rum, homemade eggnog (soooo easy to make) , and mulled wine.
Opinions? Tacky or not?
EDIT: Plus in the fall, I find more people stick to wine than hard liquor. Or maybe it is just our famlies...but thats what I notice

will it save you money?

Re: Reception Bar
Not sure. Some places it does, other places it doesn't. But we thought it would keep it simple, and they r the common drinks in fall. Wedding is going to be all fall themed.

In my experience people expect an open bar.

Re: Reception Bar
I looked into doing this for the CH to see if it would save $$ but it really didn't.
If you find that doing it this way saves a lot of money then it should be ok-but it's coming out to the same cost; then i'd probably keep the full open bar for your guests. some people prefer scotch; vodka; rum etc.

Well I don't think it would matter about the open bar. If ppl r unhappy without one then they shouldn't be there. They r coming to celebrate us not just for the booze.
And I do think it would make a diff in price b/c I would like to do this for the whole affair, not just the CH.
Plus it would help us put a nice personal touch and a great kickoff to the holiday season.

If you really want it then go for it.

If you don't think it would make a difference in the price, then why not just have the full open bar plus a bunch of signature drinks?

i am sry if i sound crass, i hate the fact that most ppl come to a wedding reception just for the drinks or meal. i go to show the couple that i support their decision and am happy for them.

You'd probably have to find a place that doesn't include the bar price in the price per person.
My FH's family doesn't drink due to religious reasons, however, we found that in our search for RH's, all of them included the bar in the price per person. So while they're not drinking, I guess you could say we're paying for it. I never really thought about it that way though. But since we want them to have fun and festive drinks, we're having our RH provide some funky 'mocktails'.
And while you're not paying for all of that alcohol, drinks like eggnog or mulled wine aren't typical drinks that a RH serves, so you might end up paying about the same if they need to get specialty ingredients. Plus the bartenders who will be mixing up the drinks.
It's something that might be more do-able if you look into less traditional RH's that are kind of set in stone when it comes to their packages.

We thought about this for a hot second, but a lot of places said that it wouldn't effect the price--they already have the liquor there so it wasn't going to take much off. Plus, if you're doing fancy drinks they might even charge more if they have to get other stuff.
I like the idea of having the regular open bar and then a signature drink--that's what we're doing and I think it makes it personal but still gives people a choice.

haven't thought about it like that. but then again when ppl r paying for teenagers they still pay the whole price per person even tho they don't drink....hmmmm. I am going to have to ask when I call the Vineyards and East Winds again....

I honestly don't think most people come to a wedding just for the drinks/food but it is definitely something people will expect. People like to have a good time to celebrate your marriage with a few drinks. I am sorry you feel that people will be just coming to your wedding to drink alcohol.

I think everyone goes to a wedding because they are happy for the couple (or at least I hope so!). I do kind of find it strange not to have open bar because people like choices. Some people only like one kind of drink, you'd be making them feel awkward by not providing them with options they prefer. Also, although this is not true for EVERYONE, lots of people need a drink to loosen up and start having fun. If you take away the drink they would have chosen and they don't like your options they may not drink and then may not loosen up as much as they'd want to in order to feel comfortable dancing. Just my honest opinion!

Right, but you could also be paying for upgraded menu choices and have 20 people be vegetarians.
Or like in my case, pay for people to drink and half of them won't.
It's just the cost of throwing a party, really.

from your reaction to people's responses i think you really want to do it. if that's what you want, then do it. imo, if it doesn't save money i wouldn't do it and limit my guests to a few drinks, but that's just me
