Reception Bar,Is ne one else thinking about doing this?

Is ne one else thinking about doing this?

Instead of a Five hr open bar, FH and I was thinking about serving beer, wine, soda, and a couple of signature drinks.

Since it is going to be in the Fall we were thinking like Hot buttered rum, homemade eggnog (soooo easy to make) , and mulled wine.

Opinions? Tacky or not?

EDIT: Plus in the fall, I find more people stick to wine than hard liquor. Or maybe it is just our famlies...but thats what I notice

I say, it's up to you, but it would probably be hard to find a RH that doesn't already include it in the price. Your guests will be happy with whatever you provide them with.

My best friend is getting married at a DIY place in Pennsylvania, and they decided only to have beer and wine - I'm sure the guests will be more than happy that there isn't a cash bar! I've been to some weddings that had that and that I think was taking it a step too far (especially if you're having your reception at a nice, well established RH).

Just IMHO.

They are there for you, but unless you're gonna spend the full 5 hours giving them your undivided attention... It is all about the celebration, however you want everyone to have a good time. the one thing people walk away from a wedding talking about is the music, food and drinks. the first thing i asked when i was looking around was is it top shelf. Nothing worse then going to a wedding and there being 2or3 drinks to choose from. Some people need a little drinks in them to loosen up and have a good time. If theres nothing for them to drink, you'll be more likely getting people sitting rather then dancing.. There's no reason why you still cant have signature drinks too. You def need to have a variety for people to choose from. If you didnt care about everyone then you wouldnt have invited them

we originally were thinking to have a very modest celebration since the funds were coming from our retirement fund. (oldladybride is really an old retired lady ) and did find a place where beer/wine/soda was cheaper than open bar.

when my cousins, who are my closest relatives and beer/wine drinkers to boot , heard that ,they had conniptions. they wanted mixed drinks and were almost ready to not come w/o open bar.

so while you think the people are coming to celebrate with you . . it did disappoint me to see their reactions.

in the end, we found the RH we really loved and all thoughts of that modest reception were thrown away (but not because of the family reaction).

I would sooner add the sig drinks to the open bar. In this area at least open bar is expected. I can't imagine not having one, especially if it sin't going to save you money
