I think you should ask they to pay the difference from what you would be paying with them to the new place!
Exactly right!! It is there fault you are paying more, not yours. The cake isn't enough!

i would absolutely ask for the difference in price. it seems to me that they would almost expect that that's what you'd be asking for. after all, you budgeted for a wedding, and after you found your hall and knew how much you'd be spending, you probably booked other vendors once you knew how much of a budget you had left. perhaps you would have gone with a cheaper florist or band or photographer if you knew you'd be working with thousands less. i'd threaten to call the BBB or Shame on You (or sue- depending on what your contract states---though most contracts are overly protective of the drafting party, which is them). this is also not even taking into consideration all the stress you had to undergo after being notified a mere 4 months before your wedding that YOUR RECEPTION HALL wasn't even available anymore!!!! it's not like they were telling you a menu option had changed. they were fully cancelling the place where you've been planning your wedding for months!!!!
I TOTALLY agree. Seriously, this is really really just WRONG. You should NOT be penzlized price wise for THEIR mistake.

I would definitley NOT have them do the cake. I don't trust thme at all. Besides, even if you trust them with your cake, that is NOT ENOUGH retribution for their stupid mistake. I would figure out exactly how much more the new venue is going to cost you (in total), go to a lawyer, threaten to sue them, and request the difference in cost, plus an additional $3,000 for the inconvenience and stress that you suffered. Period.

Re: Reception Hall UPDATE
You are all totally right! I agree with you and we will definitely try to get the amount we are out. The new venue is about $4000.00 more than what we would have been paying (that's a estimated price).
The only thing that we're concerned about is that we picked our menu but didn't FINALIZE the menu. So the overall total that we were going to pay wasn't set in stone yet. So how would we decide how much they would have to pay? We don't know where to start. I would hate to get a lawyer and pay all that money and in the end, find out we may not get anything at all

I agree. Don't let them touch anything to do with your wedding. They should pay the difference and then some. If they give you a hard time, tell them you will go to the press and I would definitely put a review out for future brides in the area. Good luck! Keep us posted!

I agree with the other girls, I would not want them to have anything to do with the cake. I would make a list of the diffrence in price that you have to pay now and demand they pay it and if they do not take them to court.
I agree!!!!!!!!!

Re: Reception Hall UPDATE
I would definetly start high-difference in price between the two places, the cake, basically a payoff.

I agree with all the pp's- ask for financial retribution!
Here's a few links that might help you out: Help Me Howard
HTH! PS- I have used the county consumer affairs complaint dept in the past & while they are slow they did resolve my problem & get me exactly what i wanted (at no cost)!
Good Luck- I think what happend to you is just terrible!

Re: Reception Hall UPDATE
First off, I am glad to hear that you found another place. I can not imagine how upset and furious that I would be at this place for doing this just months before your wedding. I agree with everyone else...you should be reimbursed the difference for what this new place will be costing you. They are the ones that screwed up and you should not have to pay thousands more for their mistake. I would threaten to contact the BBB or even start with that now. It is free and I have seen it work. Good luck!

The cake idea sounds like a good 'last resort'...
I would start HIGH and ask for the differece in prices between the two venues..
We were going to pay $30000 with you now we have to pay $40000 with the new place, is there anything you can do to help us with this new financial burden?
And im sure you can go back and forth and worst case scenario ask for the cake
I agree with this... I would start large.

Get every additional penny you have to spend back. Do you have to reprint your invitations? They should pay for that!!

Re: Reception Hall UPDATE
Make them pay the difference AND for the cake. You should be reimbursed/or shouldn't have to pay more.. AND you should get something extra for it. This is a MAJOR mistake on their part... so definitely ask for the world!
