Reception Location

Reception Location

As soon as I got engaged I wanted a wedding with personality. First I was thinking of renting a barn on the east end. I thought it would be fun. Then I realized it would cost a lot with renting a tent to add on and renting the bathrooms. Also if it rains it wouldn't be as nice and after all of the work of putting it together, I would deal with the elder guests complaining.

My dream reception location: The Metropolitian building in Long island city. This is awesome, artsy shabby chic if that makes sense. It's like a big open vintage painting...just beautiful. The only dealbreaker is price. It's 150 a person. They supply the catering and staff, Includes everything but alcohol. We think its important to have a full bar. I haven't figured it out fully yet but I think the alcohol would be around 3,000 tops for 120 people--maybe less.

I was thinking of looking into nice reception locations on long island and comparing the total costs and deciding with more of a clear number infront of me if the met would be worth it.

Can anyone recommend reception locations that don't have so much of a cheesy universal wedding look to them? I'm not a fan of the covered chairs or cheesy carpeting. I'd prefer something open and with wood floors.

Thanks for your help girls!

haha sorry about all the faces at the end...I kept pressing a bunch of them and I didn't realize they were actually being added on at the bottom :) I'm new to this!

Re: Reception Location

Why not try and do it on a Sunday to get the place you want!! What about westbury manor, it is a mansion that was made into an RH, so it is very different from other RH's, as it has a homey feel. It has fireplaces and is vintage victorian and the gardens are beautiful!!! What about Dowling, I was going to do a brunch there on a sunday and they quoted me at $80pp and it's different!!!

What about the Queens County Farm Museum?

I'm not sure about pricing, but it fits in with your original idea perfectly!

Re: Reception Location

Definitely check out the Old Field Club in Setauket!! It is a very simple and beautiful hall on the water. It has hard wood floor throughout the ballroom (the CH room has a very tasteful carpet - NOT cheesy at all!), very nice chairs, high vaulted ceiling, french doors along the side of the ballroom, and beautiful simple chandeliers. You can have an outdoor ceremony right by the water (weather permitting), and the CH is both indoors and outdoors - they have an outdoor deck (weather permitting of course). It is a gorgeous hall and does not look like a typical RH at all! The cost is $110pp (before tax and tip) for a Friday or Sunday wedding and $130pp (before tax and tip) for a Saturday wedding. They only have one wedding per day and that price includes all food, catering staff and alcohol. I have some pics of the hall in my album!!! FM me with any questions! HTH!

What about the Nassau County Museum of Art? They have amazing grounds and I know they do weddings, it's worth looking into!

Re: Reception Location

These are all awesome suggestions. The Old field club does look beautiful. Do you know if they charge extra to have the ceremony on the grounds? At 130 per person, I calculated I would save about 5,400 between the lower rate and paying seperately for alcohol. The Royalton is similar...not so much the offbeat personality but beautiful. I found online pricing that says 95-185 per person...I'm looking for a Saturday afternoon wedding in either april, june or july. The pricing during that time if I took a guess in that range might be 150, in that case it's not such a big difference from the MET. (just the alcohol cost)

I have looked into the Queens Farm, it doesn't look as nice as the older barns around the vineyards. But thank you for that suggestion :)

Nassau Country Art Museum looks nice online...does anyone know the pricing?

Thank you everyone! What an awesome bunch of brides

Hey Ellie...also does the Old Field Club have a min number of guests required? I'm thinking I'll have around 120 people...

I *think* for a Friday or Sunday they required 100 people minimum and for Saturday (which we booked) we had to guarantee 120 people.

I think that they charge extra for the ceremony on site, but I'm not 100% sure what the cost is because I'm having my ceremony off site. For some reason I *think* they mentioned that it would be $1000.....but this could be completely wrong so it's probably best to call them and ask about the ceremony.

I wanted the same shabby chic vibe that you are going for and I ended up booking Old Field Club. It's really pretty, and with the right DIY touches you can have a cool vintage looking wedding.

Before that I searched high and low for the right barn/vineyard/mountain house and with rentals, they all came out to be more expensive than OFC.

One thing though. The barn at Queens County Farm is MUCH nicer than the farm museum out East. I visited both and I would have seriously considered having my wedding at QCF but the barn only fits 125 people and I didn't see the point in renting a tent to attach to the barn to accommodate more people.

If you have less than 125 people, please do yourself a favor and check out QCF! The grounds are really cute. I also loved the barn at Martha Clara, but it was too expensive for us.

Another pretty place is the Onteora Mountain house in the Catskills, still a bit pricey at $170 pp plus site fee.

Best of luck to you!
