I'm starting my search for a reception site, and I'm just feeling totally overwhelmed.
Most specifically, I'm looking for somewhere within 20-30 minutes (or less) from South Huntington (think as if you're driving from Whitman Mall or Whitman High School) that can hold maybe 150-200 people. Obviously, less expensive is good, but I'm willing to shell out for it if I fall in love with a place.
Just generally, I'd love somewhere that's really romantic and maybe a little unique. Somewhere that feels special.
The two places I know I'm NOT interested in are the Huntington Harbor Club and the Huntington Town House. (Just not my style)
Any suggestions? I've read through these boards, but I still just don't know where to start...
Also, how many places can I see in a day? How long on average do you spend looking at a place?
thanks so much ladies.

I 2nd Chateau La Mer. It has two rooms... we are using the large ballroom which I think has a minimum of 175? There is a smaller room upstairs (which we loved)! It is on the water and the food is soooo good. They let you do a tasting and will hold your date until you do one!
Our wedding is a sat night in June and we got a great price. The CH has so much food!! Cake is included. FM me for pricing if you want.
Everyone was RAVING about the food!! Although I didnt get to taste everything it was the best. I wish I could get married there AGAIN!! The chocolate fountain was a BIG hit.

To answer your last question - Wedding Sites & Services magazine can be purchased at Barnes & Noble or Borders.
To stay in and around Huntington - the hotels - the Hilton and the Marriot both do weddings. The Hamlet in Commack, the Hamlet Wind Watch in Hauppauge/Islandia (20 minutes away, right off the LIE), Thatched Cottage in Centerport, Coindre Hall (on the expensive side), The Vanderbuilt in Centerport (also on the expensive side), Stonebridge CC (in Hauppauge), Woodbury CC, The Woodlands (also in Woodbury), Crest Hollow CC, Fox Hollow, North Ritz Club, Oheka Castle (very expensive), Smithtown Landing CC, The Watermill, Sunken Meadow State Park and The View at Crab Meadow (my personal favorite of those listed that I could afford ).
I don't know what the capacity is on any of these, you will have to call and find out. I would suggest keeping it to no more than 4 per day. You will spend about 15-20 minutes looking around at everything and then another 45-60 minutes sitting with the banquest manager going over menus and pricing options etc. Make sure you make appointments and don't just show up. If there is a wedding or something going on you'll never get to see the rooms.

We're still debating about the chocolate fountain... we're hoping they will throw it in!

There's also the Larkfield Manor in East Northport and Carlyle on the Green at Bethpage Park which are extremely close. I also recommend the Hyatt. My ceremony is in Huntington as well (in the village) and it's about 30 minutes to the Hyatt in Hauppauge (it's right next to the Hamlet Windwatch).
Yes, definitely don't do more than 4 a day, even at 4, certain things start to blend together from each place.
There are a good number of places within 20-30 minutes of where you are, I'm getting married in Huntington Village. Good luck!

Re: reception locations - where to start?
I'm booked at the Fox Hollow in Feb. 2007. I'm having around 200 people, paying 70/pp. They were flexible with me, I guess its because I'm having my wedding on a Friday during the off season. Its a beautiful place, I can't imagine myself anywhere else.
