I'm starting my search for a reception site, and I'm just feeling totally overwhelmed.
Most specifically, I'm looking for somewhere within 20-30 minutes (or less) from South Huntington (think as if you're driving from Whitman Mall or Whitman High School) that can hold maybe 150-200 people. Obviously, less expensive is good, but I'm willing to shell out for it if I fall in love with a place.
Just generally, I'd love somewhere that's really romantic and maybe a little unique. Somewhere that feels special.
The two places I know I'm NOT interested in are the Huntington Harbor Club and the Huntington Town House. (Just not my style)
Any suggestions? I've read through these boards, but I still just don't know where to start...
Also, how many places can I see in a day? How long on average do you spend looking at a place?
thanks so much ladies.

Re: reception locations - where to start?
Well I looked at a few in that area:
Thatched Cottage (very nice) Fox Hollow (reallllllly nice) Woodbury CC (not my style at all) Stonebridge CC in Hauppauge The Watermill (also nice, but not my style. I've been to a couple great parties there)
It's worth it to give them all a shot!

Re: reception locations - where to start?
Hi. I recommend you get the sites and services magazine. That is what I did when I started looking. It tells you where all the halls are and their general prices. Why do you want to stay so close the huntington area? In that area there is Larkfield Manor, Crest Hollow CC, Fox Hollow, Woodbury CC, Huntington Hilton, Thatched Cottage.... I am sure there are others, but I can't think of them.
THe most we saw in one day was 4 halls, and it was absolutely exhausting. We did two in the morning, had lunch, and did two in the afternoon. You will be there for about an hour or two.
Good luck!

Hi!
Call the halls before you go to see them, find out over the phone what the minimum requirement is for a sat/fri (whichever night you want), and what the base price per person is...it's better to not go and see the halls that fall out of your budget, that way you won't fall in love with something you can't have. Also, some halls require an appointment and others don't.
Take a look at the Hamlett in Commack. I've heard great things about it, and it's only 15 minutes from Huntington....

I think North Ritz Club is pretty close to you as well. Flowerfield is about 40 min probably and Watermill is probably 30.

We're getting married at the Harbor Club on New York Avenue in Huntington. It overlooks Huntington Harbor and the food is great. I love all the people there too and the price is very affordable. FM me if you want more information.

We booked the Riviera and we love it . You feel like there is no one in the world but the two of you. And the price is amazing for what they give you. The food is delicious we are also having the ceremony there.

I also think Westbury Manor and North Ritz Club are in that general area...not too far anyway.
The Sites and Services book is the way we started also. First you narrow it down by the # of people the place can hold, then if you have time just call to make appointments and start:)
OR to save time, just go and pop your head into places and snoop around before making a formal appointment. This will avoid wasting time at places you know right from the start you're not interested in.
good luck!

North Ritz Club is in Syosset, it's beautiful (I'm biased though) and decently priced. Let me know if you have any questions.

My ceremony will be in the Huntington area, and I live here, so I'd really like somewhere that's a) easy to get to so that the large amounts of out of town guests we have will have a smaller chance of getting lost b) close enough that it will be easy for me to stop by to drop things of or to speak to people, and won't be a schlep to get to when showing family or meeting with people there c) I've heard complaints here and there about having to make a long drive between the ceremony and the reception, and I'd like to avoid that.
basically, it's just more convenient, and there's so many places around here that there really should be no reason to go further!

We looked at Fox Hollow... it really is beautiful! I'm just worried because they seem kind of inflexible on a lot of things, since they can have more than one party going on at once.

If you are willing to go out east, Giorgio's in Baiting Hollow blows everyplace else away.
Milleridge in is beautiful too - my brother was married there.
Lands End is supposed to be spectacular, but I've never seen it.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid (per person) at Chateau La Mer? And did they have a guest minimum? What was included in the price?
It's on the water, right? My fiance would love that...
Thanks!

Re: reception locations - where to start?
I 2nd Chateau La Mer. It has two rooms... we are using the large ballroom which I think has a minimum of 175? There is a smaller room upstairs (which we loved)! It is on the water and the food is soooo good. They let you do a tasting and will hold your date until you do one!
Our wedding is a sat night in June and we got a great price. The CH has so much food!! Cake is included. FM me for pricing if you want.

I would also say Fox Hollow...it looks so pretty in all the pics, and unique, I have no idea of how much it costs. There is also the Crest Hollow Country Club near Huntington right? I think that's where my prom was...

If you want something romantic and unique you definately have to look at Coindre Hall. It's like a castle but it's this cool looking mansion. It's a little expensive (site fee), but it's really cool. You should go look at it. And I think it's in Huntington, if not very close.

Yeah, I saw Coindre Hall's website and it looked beautiful... but my fiance said he thought they didn't have a big ballroom... we're looking at almost 200 people probably, so that would be a problem. How many people can they fit?
