Reception Music

Wondering if people are playing those classic wedding reception songs like Chicken Dance, Electric Slide, Macarena, Hokey Pokey. I'm so very against these being played at my wedding and my mother is insisting that I'm boring and people won't dance unless these songs are played. I'm trying to create an elegant affair here and somehow the Macarena isn't fitting in. We are about to kill each other over this. We've also decided on not doing the whole garter-bouquet tossing thing. Again, I'm being fought with about this. Is it not our wedding girls?!!??!!? Any thoughts?

I'm with you 100% ~ No chicken, electric slide, macarena,or other similiar dances, and no garter or bouquet toss. Definitely no bouquet toss because I have always hated being herded onto the dance floor to participate, so I can't see doing it to anyone else. People WILL still dance and have fun, don't worry!

I am definitely not doing any participation dances and no garter/bouquet throwing either. I don't want to stop the party and dancing for these things.

We didn`t have those played at our reception in November. Concider this: Request that your DJ not play those songs unless specifically requested by a guest. That way, you only get the silly songs specifically wanted by someone. This worked for us.

I agree ...

We`re skipping the 'silly songs' and I have always been strongly against the garter toss, so we aren`t doing that either. People will dance. Everyone is there to have a great time and celebrate. The only thing we might do is a conga line, but I`m not even sure about that. You might want to consider a different game for the bouquet giveaway, unless you`re planning on not giving away a bouquet at all. We`re going to do the anniversary dance, but maybe you have a special dedication you`ll want to make. My brother and sister-in-law (moh) will be celebrating their 10-year anniversary the weekend we get married, and I`ve been considering doing something special to honor them. Since my sister-in-law will have her bouquet from being in the party, I`m trying to think of something else ... like playing their wedding song as a special dedication to them.

I agree ...

I'm dead set against any of these participation dances as well and I've already informed the band of this. My Mom, like Karene's, felt these should be a part of my wedding. She respected my wishes though (Thank goodness!!) I will be having the anniversary dance. My DON'T play list is longer than my PLAY list!!!!!!!

I agree ...

We are also doing an anniversary dance, and I was just curious as to what songs everyone is using for it. I am tossing around using Will You Marry Me, by Neil Diamond, and another song that I don't know the name of. Maybe someone can help me?? It starts out 'I am amazed when I look at you...', and the chorus is 'You are the love of my life, and I'm so glad you found me...' Anyone recognize this song?? : )

Anniversary Dance...

JennRenee, I can`t think of the song you`re asking about, but we`re leaning toward 'Have I Told You Lately' by Van Morrison. Of course, Rod Stewart does a more commonly played version of the song, but I prefer Van Morrison`s.

Kel, I prefer the Van Morrison version too! The Rod Stewart one sounds whiny to me. (Just my opinion, of course!) : )

I'm with you on this one; fi & I are not doing any of the traditional reception songs and no bouquet/garter either. Some people responded with 'What do you mean? You have to have the bouquet/garter toss?' But, you can't make everyone happy, right? Happy Planning!!

We are not doing the garter/bouquet but we are doing the anniversary dance. We allowed the macarena and electric slide but will NOT allow chicken dance, conga lines, hands up, hokey pokey, etc. It is your day and your party and I'm sure if the music is great everyone will be danceing even without the participation songs!

What we did

I chose not to do the garter & bouquet toss and was going to subsititute the anniversary dance in it`s place. About a week before the wedding, I decided to eliminate that as well for this reason: The bouquet/garter toss leaves out the married guests, the anniversary dance leaves out the single people. The anniversary dance also leaves out the couples that aren`t married. It was just a personal preference to omit both. In the end, I was glad to have one less 'scheduled' moment at the wedding. Believe me, between our dance, his with his mom, mine with my mom, the toasts, the cake cutting, other posed shots....it was nice to have more time to have more unstructured time, the day really does go quickly. I definitely agree with what someone wrote about doing whatever is to your liking at your wedding though.
