So my FH's friend and his gf gave us a $200 gift at our engagement party. They are now engaged, and they are having an engagement party in a few weeks that we cannot attend. We want to send a gift, but since we aren't going to the party, do we send the same amount? What is the etiquette? We want to wish them well and luck in their engagement and we are very happy for them, so if we send a different amount will it offend them?
Just for some color, our engagement party was a Saturday night affair with dinner and dancing... Sort of like a mini-wedding. Their party is a pool party at their parent's house during the day. I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but I just wanted to see what other people think.
Thanks! xoxox

Re: Reciprocating a gift
That's a tough one...I would say give what you are comfortable giving.

If you can afford it I would send the same amount, if not then do what you can comfortably.

Since you're not attending, I think $100 is more than generous.

This....It's not much different than a wedding if you think about it - some people go over the top and some don't, but you usually would reciprocate the same gift for a wedding.

I think it would be tacky if you didn't reciprocate. JMHO

I say if you can afford it - give them the same as they gave you. You dont want to hurt anyones feelings.

Re: Reciprocating a gift
I agree that $100 is more than enough - if I were attending a dinner party I would probably pay more to make sure that I cover my plate. Idk how close you are though - if they are good friends of yours I would prob give the same so that there are no hard feelings.

this. I'm not too big on the 'cover my plate' thing. I try to give as much as i feel comfortable with.

I'm actually in this EXACT situation, like down to the pool party and all. I think I'm going to do $100.

I would give the same thing, if you can afford it.
As much as we all want to say 'O! I wouldn't care what they gave' we all know in the back of heads we'd be like '***?' even if we didn't want to think about that.
So like I said, give the $200 so their are no hard feelings.

Re: Reciprocating a gift
What about selecting a nice gift off their registry, if they have one? I know it is sometimes inevitable but I hate the idea of just trading envelopes back and forth. If there is something on the registry that you'd like to give, I'd send that!

I would give the same amount. It was your choice to have the party and a nicer place and their choice to have it in the backyard. You do not know peoples money situations and maybe they are depending on their e-party money to pay for their wedding.
